- Viña Ijalba
Viña Ijalba Viña Ijalba At first glance this rather modern producer might seem to have little in common with its illustrious neighbor (Lopez de Heredia), but in fact María José was pleased to hear we would be representing the property. Ijalba has set the standard for environmental awareness in the region, from its organic production to its extensive re-cycling and environmental certification for the winery. The vineyards were all planted in disused quarries, which perhaps explains the remarkable minerality they are endowed with, especially the bigger reds with bottle age. The estate’s other distinction is the championing of the less-known varieties of Rioja such as the two Maturanas and Graciano. They have now unveiled some attractive new packaging to go with their never-ending efforts at improvement, spearheaded by long-time talented cellarmaster, Pepe, who absolutely excelled with his red wines in 2016. 1/0 Producer: Viña Ijalba Country: Spain Region: Rioja City of Origin: Logroño Owner Name: Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba Vineyard Size: 222.30 acres Total Annual Production: 60,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: Viña Ijalba is the history of a family, as well as a commitment to the evolution of Rioja, from the day that Dionisio Ruiz planted his first vine in 1975 on an old gravel pit, which reproduced the natural conditions in which vines grow in La Rioja. And so began the pioneering road, innovative and clear, that Viña Ijalba has been travelling since then. Viña Ijalba has its own stories involving the transformation of gravel pits and open cast mines into new vinyeards, and the recovery of rare indigenous varieties of Rioja vines that had almost dissappeared. Owner History: Dionisio Ruiz, Ijalba founder, is now 86 years old and he is a very important business man in Rioja with his open sky mine business. He always worked hard and focused on realizing his dreams, and hence was able to make his own winery in the 90's from his own vines planted in the 70's in his old quarries... - Bernhard
Bernhard Bernhard This 600 year-old family estate is nominally in the Hessen but its soils, with their complex amalgam of porphyry, quarzite and loam, bear more resemblance to the Nahe, which is just over the hill. Hartmut Bernhard, the current proprietor, is an instinctive wine-grower and maker. He knows exactly what he is doing without intellectualising it. The estate has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Hackenheimer Kirchberg.JPG 1/14 Producer: Bernhard Country: Germany Region: Rheinhessen City of Origin: Frei-Laubersheim Date Founded: around 1650 Owner Name: Hartmut Bernhard Vineyard Size: 11.5 HA Total Annual Production: 6,000 cases Download Info Sheet Property History: The winery places a strong emphasis on the appreciation of its terroir, aligning its benefits with a keen commitment to quality. In spring, the grape vines undergo their initial pruning, followed by a second cut during the summer when the grapes begin to ripen. The "green harvest" in August involves the reduction of leaves and removal of immature fruit, channeling the vine's energy towards the carefully selected remaining grapes. Harvesting of sound grapes occurs from September to October, with a meticulous triage based on quality. Situated in a region with an orientation between south-east and south-west, the vineyards enjoy an optimal sun exposure. During the fall, a gentle mist often hovers over the hilly slopes of the Mainz Basin, a geological feature of the area, preventing the grape fields from succumbing to freezing temperatures. This microclimate, coupled with a diverse range of soils surrounding the village, contributes to the distinctive character of the wines—fruity, spicy, and full-bodied. A constant pursuit of harmony and a well-defined aromatic structure guides the winemaking process. This journey begins with meticulous clearing, followed by maturation in steel, oak, or barrique barrels sourced from France. Owner History: Twelve generations ago, Hartmut's ancestors, originating from the Spanish Netherlands in a region known as Brabant, faced religious persecution, compelling them to emigrate. Utilizing their Gulden, they purchased vineyards, initiating the cultivation and trade of wine. In 1890, Hartmut's Great-Grandfather notably supplied wine to the government in barrels. Post World War II, his father transitioned to bottling wine, marking the inception of the present-day winery. In 1988, Terry Theise became involved and provided support to the estate. Hartmut and his wife Petra introduced modernized processes, venturing into the production of Sekt. Presently, their son Justus is upholding the family legacy, commencing in 2017 with his inaugural wine—a dry Scheurebe, which promptly sold out. While deeply rooted in tradition, the winery remains adaptable and open to innovative changes, demonstrating a nimble approach to evolving circumstances. - Antonio Madeira
Antonio Madeira Antonio Madeira When Vasco Croft of Aphros recommended António to us, he described him as “a young brilliant producer who is making a unique job with reaching old vines and terroirs, using organic farming and biodynamics.” He further stated that he thought these the best wines in the Dão today, and certainly the most mineral. We, having had the happy experience of working with Alvaro Castro for several years, thought that this might be a stretch, but were encouraged to learn that António had made his first wines with Alvaro. After a long and intense video call and a giddy tasting of a range of his wines in Germany, all doubt was dispelled and we could hardly believe our good fortune at having secured the rights to yet another Portuguese star of the highest order. Despite his exemplary Portuguese name, António is actually a Frenchman, brought up in Paris. He had a successful career as an engineer until the wine siren came calling and he was moved to return to his ancestral home in the Serra da Estrela, the high country which yields most of the Dão’s greatest wines – and Portugal’s best cheeses. He set out to find unknown or abandoned vineyards planted to old vines and made his first wine in 2011. Since then, he has expanded his sources to about 25 plots planted in eight hectares, all cultivated organically. He typically works with field blends, but has an understandable regard for Encruzado, which he is systematically replacing for Tinto Roriz. António is not the first grower we know who claims to be inspired by Burgundy (Fílipa Páto is another), but he is one of the few whose wines bear out the ambitious homage. 1/0 Producer: Antonio Madeira Country: Portugal Region: Dão Subregion: Serra da Estrela City of Origin: Seia Date Founded: 2010 Owner Name: Antonio Madeira Vineyard Size: 8 HA Total Annual Production: 30,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: António Madeira, who is French of Portuguese descent, has his roots in the foothills of Serra da Estrela. Since 2010, António Madeira has been researching the places in this sub-region, that his ancestors elected as the best for winemaking, those that we might call the 'Grands Crus of the Dão highlands' and found a series of old vines that are distinctive because of the authenticity of their grape varieties, the characteristics and nuances of their granite soils and sun exposures. Owner History: António Madeira is of French and Portuguese descent. He worked in Paris in Engineering during 15 years before changing his life, leaving Paris and Engineering to dedicate his life to make wines in the region of his family roots, the Dão in Portugal. Despite being an early maturing grape variety that loses its acidity quickly and is therefore complicated with the global warming, this Bical from our Celta Vineyard is a mystery, perhaps due to the adaptation of these ancient clones in a very special vineyard. Primary Vineyard Name Vinha Celta of 0,65ha (3/4 of the vineyard planted with Bical in 1961, 1/4 planted with Jaen in 1990). Vinha Celta = Celtic Vineyard, because of the wood that touches the vineyard, with some stones configurations that could be from the Celtic presence in the area. SOIL: Granitic. Apart from a sandier central patch, the soils are siltier and richer, with finer quartz crystals. Soil Types Granite Elevation (meters) max 292m, min 288m Vine Age 65 years old Yields (hl/ha) Average 40 Farming Practices Certified organic, practicing biodynamic, practicing regenerative, certified sustainable; ECOCERT and GLOBAL G.A.P. AGRICERT certified Harvest Method Hand-harvested Additional Harvest Notes The timing for picking must be very precise, its our first variety to be picked, in order to keep the high acidity - alcohol - flavour compounds balance. Other Vineyard Details Pedro Parra classified Vinha Celta as a “grand cru” level, because of the quality of the granite alterites. Every year this vineyard delivers an incredible balance of potential alcohol with immense acidity and mineral sapidity. Notes from the Producer: Old clones of Bical (aka Borrado das Moscas) planted in 1961. Despite being an early maturing grape variety that loses its acidity quickly and is therefore complicated with the global warming, this Bical from our Celta Vineyard is a mystery, perhaps due to the adaptation of these ancient clones in a very special vineyard. Bical da Vinha Celta is quickly gaining recognition as one of Portugal's greatest white wines, more than just one of the best wines made from this grape variety, which is so difficult to work with in the vineyard and in the winery to achieve excellence. Very sensitive to harvest timing, it can quickly lose its acidity and tension and develop too much alcohol. It can also oxidise easily if worked in a more hands-off vinification process with low sulphur. The secret to what makes this Bical so special may lie in the old vineyard, planted in the 60s, with ancient Bical clones that are very well adapted to its conditions. And in a very reductive vinification process, using all the lees (which are of very high quality, thanks to the careful viticulture we are practising).
