SIJ-MAT23 View Viña Ijalba's Producer Page Viña Ijalba 2023 Maturana Blanca This was once the only Maturana Blanca in the world, grown on two hectares owned by Ijalba. But, as with the once similarly-unique Graciano, it has spawned imitators. And with good reason! It is actually the variety with the oldest known written citation in Rioja, dating from 1622. Faintly golden, opulently peachy on the nose, and then surprisingly stony and long on the palate, this is quite a character, that effortlessly withstands its classic burgundian treatment. As singular and obscure a wine as can be imagined! ASC-ZUG21 View Bio-weingut Schreiner's Producer Page Bio-weingut Schreiner 2021 "Zusammen Gehen" ORGANIC The fogs of the Neusiedlersee, which foster the development of the botrytis intrinsic to Rust’s famous Ausbruchs, also promote other moulds that are of less noble effect. Climate change has made it harder, not easier, to cope with this hydric stress. The Schreiners have consequently become very interested in the burgeoning field of “PiWi” (the abbreviated German term for “fungus resistant”) varieties. This new wine is a blend of Weissburgunder and Stella, a resistant vine related to chardonnay, to which it bears little resemblance. We selected it not because we are eager to be in the vanguard of this new future but because, simply speaking, it is a plainly successful wine. Endowed with the familiar snap-and-crackle and saline length of a Schreiner wine, it pleases as much as it provokes. Part of the proceeds from every bottle go to a charity supporting Lebanese refugees. There were a few thunderstorms in late spring which mostly affected our vineyards around La Rosa, and thankfully not Bandeiras which was largely dry. Whilst most of western Europe was burning, the Douro experienced a relatively cool summer with normal temperatures. At the end of August we had some days of extreme temperaturesbut by the 28th the heat had calmed down giving ideal ripening conditions. We had two periods of rain during September which meant we had to start and stop picking more than normal. Thanks to good viticultural practices, the grapes held up remarkably well and, despite the rain, there was virtually no sign of any rot. AAB-GVL23 View Am Berg's Producer Page Am Berg 2023 Gruner Veltliner Landwein We confess to mixed feelings about the subversive quality of the Austrian GV Liter phenomenon. Is it really fair to all the other good light dry whites of the world that these people can put such absurdly tasty and characterful wines into such large bottles at such a ridiculously low price? Probably not, but let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth. Here is as good an example of the genre as you can hope to meet, with an improbable mineral charge to include among its many assets.
