Ch. de Fontarèche 2022 "Arrenaou" (IGP Pays d'Oc)
Arrenaou is the ancestral name for the powerful Alicante Bouschet variety, one of the handful of black varieties whose juice is naturally coloured. The trick with this beast of a grape is to coax all its inner sweetness out by means of a controlled, relatively short pressing. This takes nothing away from the inherent power and deep hue of the wine. Fifty-year old vines and a healthy dollop of carbonically-fermented Carignan do the rest of the trick. The end-result is a densely constituted but velvety wine, with a proper lashing of tannin and lovely berry fruit.
