Click Here Singer Estate Page Wine Wise introduces Singer Baker Lane Estate Syrah and Viognier For the first time in its 30 year history, WineWise has added a California estate to its portfolio. Stephen Singer will be known to many of you as a ground-breaking figure on the California wine scene. In the 1980's, he opened a wine shop in San Francisco called Singer & Foy, whose Saturday afternoon tastings were the stuff of legend. I (Hiram) personally attended probably too many of them, and was able to encounter wines from the likes of Jayer, Chave and Raveneau for the first time. Equally importantly, Stephen and I became friends. Stephen was also the long-time wine director at Berkeley's Chez Panisse, whose list was something of a Holy Grail. He opened a series of restaurants to great acclaim, among them César and Table 29, as well as pioneering the importation of top-flight artisinal olive oil from Tuscany. In 2002, Stephen decided to complete the circle of his vinous odyssey by doing the one thing he had not done - grow grapes and produce wine. His innate inclination to seek elegance over power drew him to the cooler confines of Sebastopol, where he found a promising, west-facing hillside site totalling all of six acres on Baker Lane, whose name gave rise to the estate's initial identity. The Syrah and Viognier grapes that he and his long-time viticulturist and wine-maker Greg Adams grew quickly developed a reputation for top quality and were eagerly snapped up by some of the best-known names among Sonoma wineries, such as Arnot-Roberts and Scribe. In 2019, however, Stephen decided that the way forward lay with making less, not more wine. So he prepared to wind down the Baker Lane brand, which encompassed an array of excellent wines including several bought varieties, and he re-launched in 2022 as Singer Baker Lane Estate. Today, Stephen makes tiny quantities of just two wines - a Syrah (270 6-packs) and a Viognier (90 6-packs) - from the choicest parcels of his undulating estate, while continuing to supply his long-time customers with grapes that are surplus to his needs. Being an artist by avocation, Stephen also designed the striking labels of his new wines himself. Oh, and let us not forget to mention that he also cultivates a large number of olive trees from which he squeezes exceptionally fine oil. It is therefore with great pleasure and pride that WineWise announces its representation in California of Singer Baker Lane Estate. It will be apparent that there is not very much to go around. But if you are an aficionado of great Rhône wines from Syrah and Viognier, these wines will speak to you. Please do not hesitate to ask your sales representative about them. We thank you for your attention to this long announcement and look forward to hearing from you. Female Wine Producers We 're proud to support female winemakers. These wineries are female-led. - Tetramythos
Tetramythos Tetramythos Another young winery founded in 1999 by the brothers Aristides and Eustatius Stathios Spanos, it offers a splendid range of impeccably made wines from both indigenous and international varietals at improbably low prices. The startling quality is greatly attributable to their stellar wine-maker, Panagiotis Pappagiannopoulos. The mindboggling vineyards rise to elevations of 1000 meters, ensuring that diurnal temperature range that is so often the lodestone of quality in Greece. Enjoying unique limestone soils and making wines only from free-run juice, Tetramythos offers a finesse and purity that are unexpected at this price level. The “Nature” series wines are made according to some biodynamic principles e.g. the whites are harvested, pressed and bottled on flower days, and the reds on fruit days. Panagiotis aims to make all his wines in this style in the coming years. We find the style so compelling that we have essentially adapted our range entirely to it. malagousia.jpg 1/9 Producer: Tetramythos Country: Greece Region: Patras Subregion: Achaia City of Origin: Ano Diacopto Date Founded: 2004 Owner Name: Aristides Spanos, Stathis Spanos, Panayiotis Papagiannopoulos Vineyard Size: 86.45 acres Total Annual Production: 200,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: Located in the village of Ano Diacopto, on the slopes of Mount Aroania, we have a beautiful winery, with state of the art machinery, in a lovely building, which fits perfectly with the surrounding mountainous area. The vineyards are planted mostly with indigenous Greek along with some international grape varieties, and we practice strictly organic cultivation. Owner History: The Spanos brothers, Aristos and Stathis, are locals who were involved in grape growing and wine production early in their lives. In 1999 they meet Panayiotis Papagiannopoulos, a talented and highly inspired winemaker (an dalso from the area!), who joined the team. In the years that followed they produced the first bottles of Tetramythos, planted new vineyards, and in 2003 began the construction of a tasteful winery which they completed in 2004. Their philosophy is to combine scientific knowledge and traditional methods in order to produce high quality wines, in the most natural possible way, with low intervention and no additives, to express the typicity of the special regional terroir. - Dom. Mucyn
Dom. Mucyn Dom. Mucyn It is ironic that we, who love Syrah almost more than any other black grape, had never before imported a producer from the northern Rhône. In truth, it is only because we had never encountered one available to us who was special enough to warrant the move. All that changed due to our discovery of Hélène and Jean-Pierre Mucyn, a young couple introduced to us by Jean-Marc Espinasse of Rouge-Bleu. Established in Crozes and St. Joseph since 2001, they have quietly charted their own course and developed a European following for their stylish, unexaggerated wines. 2016 was especially successful here, perhaps because of rather than despite the chronicled climatic challenges. But prices had to rise because of the pitiful yields. 1/2 Producer: Dom. Mucyn Country: France Region: Rhone Subregion: Northern Rhone Valley City of Origin: Gervans Date Founded: 2001 Owner Name: Helene and Jean-Pierre Mucyn Vineyard Size: 44.5 acres Total Annual Production: 70,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: After settling in the land of Hermitage, amid vineyards and apricot trees, the Mucyns fell in love with a 18th century building, on the N7 that runs through the region. Situated 300 m from the River Rhône, this former boat lodge, where boatmen used to lodge overnight and whose stables could accommodate over 80 horses, was built in around 1750. The cellar beneath the building provides ideal temperature and humidity conditions for the vinification of white wines. Owner History: Hélène and Jean-Pierre Mucyn set up as wine producers in 2001. They uprooted from Champagne and laid down new roots on the banks of the River Rhône. With a change of career, a radically different lifestyle, and a new home for the entire family, the 2001 vintage is, for them, synonymous with a new start. After resuming studies in viticulture and oenology, Hélène and Jean-Pierre acquired their first vin de pays plots as well as a few hectares of orchards. Hélénedoes all the vineyard work, and Jean-Pierre handles the winemaking, but in reality they do nothing without the other. Wines By Dom. Mucyn Dom.
