PDA-VCB23 View Domínio do Açor's Producer Page Domínio do Açor 2023 Vinha Celta Bical Hailed by Revista de Vinhos, Portugal’s leading wine periodical, as Portugal’s Best White Wine of 2024, this is a taut, scented and infinitely fine rendition of a varietal which, if any doubters remain after trying Fílipa Páto’s stage-setting examples, can take its place among the world’s leading white grapes. Archaeological remains suggest that this vineyard was once a Roman farm, hence its name. Despite being an early maturing grape variety that loses its acidity quickly and is therefore complicated with the global warming, this Bical from our Celta Vineyard is a mystery, perhaps due to the adaptation of these ancient clones in a very special vineyard. Primary Vineyard Name Vinha Celta of 0,65ha (3/4 of the vineyard planted with Bical in 1961, 1/4 planted with Jaen in 1990). Vinha Celta = Celtic Vineyard, because of the wood that touches the vineyard, with some stones configurations that could be from the Celtic presence in the area. SOIL: Granitic. Apart from a sandier central patch, the soils are siltier and richer, with finer quartz crystals. Soil Types Granite Elevation (meters) max 292m, min 288m Vine Age 65 years old Yields (hl/ha) Average 40 Farming Practices Certified organic, practicing biodynamic, practicing regenerative, certified sustainable; ECOCERT and GLOBAL G.A.P. AGRICERT certified Harvest Method Hand-harvested Additional Harvest Notes The timing for picking must be very precise, its our first variety to be picked, in order to keep the high acidity - alcohol - flavour compounds balance. Other Vineyard Details Pedro Parra classified Vinha Celta as a “grand cru” level, because of the quality of the granite alterites. Every year this vineyard delivers an incredible balance of potential alcohol with immense acidity and mineral sapidity. Notes from the Producer: Old clones of Bical (aka Borrado das Moscas) planted in 1961. Despite being an early maturing grape variety that loses its acidity quickly and is therefore complicated with the global warming, this Bical from our Celta Vineyard is a mystery, perhaps due to the adaptation of these ancient clones in a very special vineyard. Bical da Vinha Celta is quickly gaining recognition as one of Portugal's greatest white wines, more than just one of the best wines made from this grape variety, which is so difficult to work with in the vineyard and in the winery to achieve excellence. Very sensitive to harvest timing, it can quickly lose its acidity and tension and develop too much alcohol. It can also oxidise easily if worked in a more hands-off vinification process with low sulphur. The secret to what makes this Bical so special may lie in the old vineyard, planted in the 60s, with ancient Bical clones that are very well adapted to its conditions. And in a very reductive vinification process, using all the lees (which are of very high quality, thanks to the careful viticulture we are practising). It was cultivated by few local farmers and almost got extinct, until Tetramythos winery pointed out its unique and noble character back in 2004. Organic and minimal intervention wine produced from north-facing and cool climate traditional bush vines, 42 years old at 840 meters altitude, in Pteri & Mamousia mountainous plateaus and in steep slopes of Aegialeia region. Aigialeia is located in the North coast of Peloponnese, overlooking the sea of the Corinthian gulf. Cultivated in clay soils, these non-irrigated vines provide low yields of high-quality grapes. Use only the free run wine, with typical red vinification at 24℃, spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. Extraction for 2 weeks. Ageing in big oak tank of 5.000 liters capacity for 5-6 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, with minimal sulphites addition. Wine with light ruby color, aromas of cherry, licorice and strawberry, leathery and smoky flavors with hints of noble earthiness. Gentle with light tannins, delicate texture with refreshing acidity. The grape varieties of this wine are from old vines. The red variety Kotsifali is one of the most remarkable red grape varieties in Crete, while the red variety Mandilari stands out for its rich color and intense tannins. Thus, their combination is considered particularly successful. They are perfectly combined, as Kotsifali gives wines with high alcohol content , high acidity and elegant aromas, while Mandilari gives wines with primary aromas, intense red color and tannins. The red varietals that go into making the PDO Peza red wines are 80% Kotsifali and 20% Mandilari and create the balanced wine produced here for many generations.
