  • Ch. Landereau

Read more It is not entirely accurate to describe this Bordeaux stalwart as “new” because Bruno Baylet was a staple of the WineWise portfolio in its early days. But it is many years since we worked with his admirable wines, so we are taking the liberty of treating him as a newcomer, as to most of you he will be one. We could not be happier to re-engage with his uncompromisingly honest and forceful wines. The estate has the French certificate of sustainability known as “Haute Valeur Environnementale”. Ch. Landereau FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Ch. Chateau Landereau bottles classic style red, white and rosé wines, made with modern techniques and vision (optimum maturity, plots selection, temperature control, inert gas and gravity are used in the winery) with recognized value. In the vineyard, reasoned and sustainable farming methods are in line with the life of the soil, the preservation of the ecosystem and the fostering of the vines. That is the reason why Château Landereau turned itselves to a the HIGH ENVIRONMENTAL VALUE certification (HVE3) and Bee Friendly label. • Patrice Colin

Read more From a little-known satellite to the north of the Loire region, not far from Tours, comes this super practitioner of old vines Chenin Blanc (and Pineau d’Aunis), offering us yet another expression of this most miraculous of white grapes. The soils boast a lot of flint (rather like parts of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé). They have 20 parcels spread over 30 hectares, all of which are laboriously worked ten times a year. Colin attributes the dependable acidity, even in hot years, to this practice. Patrice Colin FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Patrice Colin Country: France Region: Loire Subregion: Côteaux du Vendômois City of Origin: Thoré la Rochette Date Founded: 1735 Owner Name: Patrice Colin Vineyard Size: 61.75 acres Total Annual Production: 150,000 bottles Property History: Read more This estate has been passed from father to son for 8 generations. It was Emilien Colin in 1900 who developed the direct sale of wine and contributed to the enlargement of the estate with 6 hectares of vineyards and 2 plow horses.Today the estate extends over 25 hectares of vines, some of which are centenarians. The estate is located in the town of Thore la Rochette where Rochambeau, the commander of French troops during the American War of Independence , most importantly at the deciding battle of Yorktown in 1781, is buried. So yes, if you like "Hamilton," this is your wine. Owner History: Read more Patrice took over the estate in 1982 after specialized studies in the vineyard and wine. He enlarged the estate considerably and quickly oriented it towards organic farming. • Eladio Pineiro

Read more Eladio Pineiro is one of the wine world’s great personalities and innovators. It is not often that one encounters a producer who truly re-invents a genre, but that is what he has done with his unique approach to lees-aging. A very recent visit also found him experimenting with aging a wine in the sea (a truly remarkable outcome there) and, after six years of experimentation, producing a sparkling Albariño by the ancestral method that would frankly put many a champagne to shame. Both of these original conceptions are now available for your discovery. The irrepressible Eladio is also the only producer we have met who employs not one but two full-time artists on his staff. The first, Daniel, is a talented cartoonist whose creations emblazon every new wine (including an annually changing label for Envidiacochina that is designed to track developments in the life of Eladio and his wife – some of which would be considered too racy in the U.S.A.). Daniel also designs all the packaging and publicity material, as well as serving as Eladio’s English interpreter. Eladio was one of the founders of large scale Albariño production in Spain with Mar de Frades in 1983, but left it all behind when his wife fell ill in 2003, selling the winery and keeping only a few prized vineyards. Now he dedicates himself to making artisanal hand-crafted Albariño (also hand-bottled and hand labeled….you get the drift) in the prime vineyard area of the Salnés Valley. Additionally, and most unusually, they make red wine in Portugal’s Alentejo, where they have a second home. Eladio also commissioned the unique and patented bottle shapes. Everything is bio-dynamic and the wines are as original as they sound. Don't miss them, and don't wait - total production is about 5,000 cases. In January 2003, due to events that have influenced the life of his family, he decided to sell his winery, only keeping the vineyards he owned. Supported by his family, Eladio decided to take a step forward, doing what really excited, and motivates him, and started making wines again. By showing their roots and history, he produced a red from Portugese Alentejo, and whites from Albariño Rías Baixas, while having absolute freedom to create, and develop small amounts of real wine. • Pascal Bellier

Read more Pascal Bellier makes an array of splendidly clear and authentic wines in this little-known corner of the Loire, just south of Blois. • Georges Rémy

Read more All hail a new star! We were lucky enough to visit and taste with this producer just as he was releasing his first vintage (2014) in June 2018. He has taken his time getting things right, having made still red wine commercially since 2011, and gradually getting his vineyards (in the best parcels of Grands Crus Bouzy, Ambonnay and Louvois, and 1er Cru Tauxières)) to where they were biodynamically certified in 2020.. The average age of the vines is impressively old, and Georges’ intention is to enshrine the genetic material by practicing exclusively “sélection massale”. Ploughing and tilling have been practised for several years, together with composting (home-made). The estate runs to less than 5 hectares, and Georges vinifies personally only about 20% of his production. So the quantities are absolutely miniscule. Even so, he makes several different wines in an effort to highlight the diversity of his terroirs, which are distributed over 17 separate plots. The house style is to harvest ripe, never chapitalize, and vinify 100% in oak. We have just received our annual allocations, including homeopathic quantities of the most sought-after single parcel wines. Georges Rémy FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Georges Rémy Country: France Region: Champagne Subregion: Montage de Riems City of Origin: Bouzy Date Founded: 2011 Owner Name: Georges Remy Vineyard Size: 5.3 HA Total Annual Production: 10,000 bottles Property History: Read more We began vinifying Champagne hillsides in 2011 and had our first harvest in 2014. • Singer Estate

Read more It has only taken WineWise thirty years to take on a California producer, but we have been waiting for the right one! We have actually known Stephen for close to forty years, dating back to his pioneering days at Chez Panisse and the legendary wine shop, Singer & Foy, in San Francisco. For the last twenty or so, he has been quietly mastering the art of growing and producing wine in his rolling, cool six-acre vineyard west of Sebastopol. Together with vineyard-manager and wine-maker Greg Adams, he has developed a reputation for producing some of the best Viognier and Syrah grapes in California, most of which are sold to Arnot-Roberts and Scribe. The choicest, however, are kept for the Estate’s own homeopathically small bottlings, which we are inordinately proud to offer you here. Viticulture is “sustainable, regenerative and non-certified organic’. Singer Estate FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Singer Estate Country: USA Region: California Date Founded: 2003 Owner Name: Stephen Singer Vineyard Size: 5.4 acres Syrah, .6 acres Viognier Property History: Read more Twenty years of farming on Baker Lane has proven that, while we’ve never failed to produce grapes of quality and distinction, each growing season presents a diverse narrative and occasionally very complicated challenges to resolve. Coupling that understanding to the attention to detail provided by Greg Adams (our viticulturist and winemaker since 2007) has meant that the learning curve for understanding the character and potential for our Baker Lane vines has been steep and fascinating. Alas, the lesson in the meaning and consequence of the site that our Estate vineyard has provided has been profound. Owner History: Read more Although painting has steadfastly remained Stephen’s passion for 50 years, in 1983, with his daughter Fanny in utero, the idea of a working life in the wine business emerged. Fanny’s Mother, Alice Waters, encouraged him to open a retail store in San Francisco, and Singer & Foy Wines (a bottle shop with a wine tasting schedule of global scope) provided an ample on-the-job business and detailed wine education. Traveling broadly throughout the wine world with his mentor, Kermit Lynch, Alice and others, further instilled a fine appreciation for the subtleties of culture and viticulture that make wines of distinction possible. In serving 15 years as a Board Member and the wine director for Chez Panisse, Stephen was engaged in the ongoing green revolution that it helped spawn. This motivated him to celebrate the indelible connection between the earth and a gracious table through a variety of pursuits. These included wine consulting for many restaurants throughout the Bay Area, helping develop several restaurants of his own (including Table 29 in Napa and César in Berkeley), and Stephen Singer, Olio, an importer and distributor of fine Italian olive oils and vinegars. This entrepreneurial spirit, tethered to a desire to gain an empirical understanding of viticulture and winemaking (and the attractions of the open space of rural life), led to the creation of Baker Lane Vineyards. It has provided Stephen the rare opportunity to transform its 15 acres into a biodynamically farmed Syrah and Viognier vineyard with singular terroir, olive orchard and home. Baker Lane’s mission is to produce regeneratively cultivated , exceptional expressions of cool climate (and most importantly, table friendly) Syrah and Viognier has appropriately drawn on all aspects of Stephen’s skill set. • Forest-Marié

Read more A chance encounter with their Blanc de Blancs at a restaurant after attending the Salon des Vins de Loire at Angers, and the discovery that my hotel proprietor was the local agent led to a protracted but ultimately successful process of negotiation whereby we became the California importers for this exceptionally good house. Situated in Trigny, a village that shares the same Massif de St. Thierry terroir as our long-time favorite, Chartogne-Taillet, this producer has quietly developed a following in France, culminating in some top ratings in the Guide Hachette. Thierry Forest (after whom the local mountain is not named) is an unassuming but serious wine-grower who makes authentic, forceful champagnes that exemplify all we have come to love about the récoltants. Particularly notable is his preference for aging his wines much longer than is the norm before release. Almost half the grapes now come from the Premier Cru village of Éceuil, home of his wife Gracianne Marié. Otherwise, they have no fewer than 86 parcels distributed in four communes, three of which are Premier Crus. The average age of their vines is 40 years, they have practised the planting of grass between rows for 35 years, and all grapes are harvested by hand. Fermentation is conducted with natural yeasts. Son Louis is now also on board, and has already created a cuvée of his own. He is clearly a chip off the old block! Forest-Marié FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Forest-Marié Country: France Region: Champagne Subregion: Montagne de Reims Premier Cru et Massif de Saint Thierry City of Origin: Ecueil, Sacy, Villedommange, Jouy Les Reims, Trigny, Prouilly et Chenay Date Founded: 1991 Owner Name: Thierry et Gracianne Forest-Marié Vineyard Size: 18 Total Annual Production: 80,000 bottles Property History: Read more The adjacent property deed from 1746 attests that growing vines is a long family tradition. It was barely interrupted when one of our ancestors took part in the Napoleon's Invasion of Russia. We are currently running a vineyard that has increased little by little over 9 generations. It brings two different families together: Thierry’s family from Trigny and Gracianne’s family - his wife - from Ecueil. • Bodegas Proelio

Read more Proelio is one of three wineries belonging to Javier Palacios, each dedicated to different genres : Nivarius exclusively (and most unusually) to white Rioja, Trus to Ribeira del Duero, and Proelio to red wines. The vineyards are relatively high in the Rioja Alta at 650 meters, and offer an impressive variety of soil types and inclinations. But they are generally north-facing and have an average age of 45 years. Also, unusually for the region, the wines are produced 85% from their own holdings. Farming practices are very traditional, with all the plowing done by horses. The estate is in the second year of conversion to organic certification. Fermentation via indigenous yeasts is achieved in large wooden vats, with further aging all done in increasingly large barrels and final assembly executed in concrete. • Bio-weingut Schreiner

Read more Gernot and Victoria Schreiner are a magnetic couple who have pursued their own singular way in wine since taking over the family’s 6 hectare estate in their hometown of Rust. Their adherence to organic practice far exceeds the requirements for certification, extending as it does to everything that they utilise in their vineyards and winery, including what they eat and what they pack with. It is a truly holistic and entirely sincere approach to life that one has to respect. But when one considers the quality of the wines that they make, one is awestruck by the magnitude of their achievement. These are people of the highest quality whose nature is reflected in the authenticity and limpidity of their wines. It is frankly astonishing that their wines have not been discovered before in America. Bio-weingut Schreiner FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Bio-weingut Schreiner Country: Austria Region: Burgenland Subregion: Rust City of Origin: Rust Date Founded: 2007 Owner Name: Gernot & Victoria Schreiner Vineyard Size: 7 HA Total Annual Production: 25,000 bottles Property History: Read more 2007 taken over by Gernot and Victoria from Gernot's uncle, Johannes Schreiner. Until then 100% ex cellar sales to private consumers in combination with a bike rental in the house. Until the 1980s, the winery was traditionally run as a mixed agricultural estate (viticulture, pigs, cattle, chickens) by the grandparents of Gernot, Edith and Alfred Schreiner. In 2007, Gernot's vineyards, which he had already planted or cultivated in the 1990s in addition to his main occupation at a winery in Rust, were merged with the vineyards of Gernot's uncle Johannes. The entire vineyard area was immediately managed organically and applied for certification after the 2007 harvest. From the vintage 2012 on the wines have been certified organic. In the 10 years of management by Gernot and Victoria, the ex cellar sales have diminished and merely make up a small part of the total wine sales. During this time, not only were the vineyards converted, but also was the 400-year-old town house in the middle of Rust's old town, owned by Schreiner family for about 100 years, was gradually and authentically renovated and revitalised. In 2018 the Schreiners took an important step in their vineyards: they selected and planted a Blaufränkisch-PIWI variety explicitly for vinification. Owner History: Read more Gernot actually moved in from a different career. He graduated in computer science and tried his hand at studying computer science for a short time. The turn to viticulture took place promptly. He worked for about 15 years in a renowned winery in Rust, with which Hennry made his first but all the more succinct statement in the red wine sector in 2001 and finally started building an organic winery together with Victoria in 2007, both following their dream. Victoria is also switched her career, she originally studied social work. Through her love for Gernot, her love for wine has grew. • Viña Ijalba

Read more At first glance this rather modern producer might seem to have little in common with its illustrious neighbor (Lopez de Heredia), but in fact María José was pleased to hear we would be representing the property. Ijalba has set the standard for environmental awareness in the region, from its organic production to its extensive re-cycling and environmental certification for the winery. The vineyards were all planted in disused quarries, which perhaps explains the remarkable minerality they are endowed with, especially the bigger reds with bottle age. The estate’s other distinction is the championing of the less-known varieties of Rioja such as the two Maturanas and Graciano. They have now unveiled some attractive new packaging to go with their never-ending efforts at improvement, spearheaded by long-time talented cellarmaster, Pepe, who absolutely excelled with his red wines in 2016. Viña Ijalba FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Viña Ijalba Country: Spain Region: Rioja City of Origin: Logroño Owner Name: Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba Vineyard Size: 222.30 acres Total Annual Production: 60,000 bottles Property History: Read more Viña Ijalba is the history of a family, as well as a commitment to the evolution of Rioja, from the day that Dionisio Ruiz planted his first vine in 1975 on an old gravel pit, which reproduced the natural conditions in which vines grow in La Rioja. And so began the pioneering road, innovative and clear, that Viña Ijalba has been travelling since then. • Bernhard

Read more This 600 year-old family estate is nominally in the Hessen but its soils, with their complex amalgam of porphyry, quarzite and loam, bear more resemblance to the Nahe, which is just over the hill. Hartmut Bernhard, the current proprietor, is an instinctive wine-grower and maker. He knows exactly what he is doing without intellectualising it. The estate has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Bernhard FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Bernhard Country: Germany Region: Rheinhessen City of Origin: Frei-Laubersheim Date Founded: around 1650 Owner Name: Hartmut Bernhard Vineyard Size: 11.5 HA Total Annual Production: 6,000 cases Property History: Read more The winery places a strong emphasis on the appreciation of its terroir, aligning its benefits with a keen commitment to quality. In spring, the grape vines undergo their initial pruning, followed by a second cut during the summer when the grapes begin to ripen. The "green harvest" in August involves the reduction of leaves and removal of immature fruit, channeling the vine's energy towards the carefully selected remaining grapes. Harvesting of sound grapes occurs from September to October, with a meticulous triage based on quality. Situated in a region with an orientation between south-east and south-west, the vineyards enjoy an optimal sun exposure. During the fall, a gentle mist often hovers over the hilly slopes of the Mainz Basin, a geological feature of the area, preventing the grape fields from succumbing to freezing temperatures. This microclimate, coupled with a diverse range of soils surrounding the village, contributes to the distinctive character of the wines—fruity, spicy, and full-bodied. A constant pursuit of harmony and a well-defined aromatic structure guides the winemaking process. This journey begins with meticulous clearing, followed by maturation in steel, oak, or barrique barrels sourced from France. Owner History: Read more Twelve generations ago, Hartmut's ancestors, originating from the Spanish Netherlands in a region known as Brabant, faced religious persecution, compelling them to emigrate. Utilizing their Gulden, they purchased vineyards, initiating the cultivation and trade of wine. In 1890, Hartmut's Great-Grandfather notably supplied wine to the government in barrels. Post World War II, his father transitioned to bottling wine, marking the inception of the present-day winery. In 1988, Terry Theise became involved and provided support to the estate. Hartmut and his wife Petra introduced modernized processes, venturing into the production of Sekt. Presently, their son Justus is upholding the family legacy, commencing in 2017 with his inaugural wine—a dry Scheurebe, which promptly sold out. While deeply rooted in tradition, the winery remains adaptable and open to innovative changes, demonstrating a nimble approach to evolving circumstances.
