  • Bio-weingut Schreiner

Read more Gernot and Victoria Schreiner are a magnetic couple who have pursued their own singular way in wine since taking over the family’s 6 hectare estate in their hometown of Rust. Their adherence to organic practice far exceeds the requirements for certification, extending as it does to everything that they utilise in their vineyards and winery, including what they eat and what they pack with. It is a truly holistic and entirely sincere approach to life that one has to respect. But when one considers the quality of the wines that they make, one is awestruck by the magnitude of their achievement. These are people of the highest quality whose nature is reflected in the authenticity and limpidity of their wines. It is frankly astonishing that their wines have not been discovered before in America. Bio-weingut Schreiner FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Bio-weingut Schreiner Country: Austria Region: Burgenland Subregion: Rust City of Origin: Rust Date Founded: 2007 Owner Name: Gernot & Victoria Schreiner Vineyard Size: 7 HA Total Annual Production: 25,000 bottles Property History: Read more 2007 taken over by Gernot and Victoria from Gernot's uncle, Johannes Schreiner. Until then 100% ex cellar sales to private consumers in combination with a bike rental in the house. Until the 1980s, the winery was traditionally run as a mixed agricultural estate (viticulture, pigs, cattle, chickens) by the grandparents of Gernot, Edith and Alfred Schreiner. In 2007, Gernot's vineyards, which he had already planted or cultivated in the 1990s in addition to his main occupation at a winery in Rust, were merged with the vineyards of Gernot's uncle Johannes. The entire vineyard area was immediately managed organically and applied for certification after the 2007 harvest. From the vintage 2012 on the wines have been certified organic. In the 10 years of management by Gernot and Victoria, the ex cellar sales have diminished and merely make up a small part of the total wine sales. During this time, not only were the vineyards converted, but also was the 400-year-old town house in the middle of Rust's old town, owned by Schreiner family for about 100 years, was gradually and authentically renovated and revitalised. In 2018 the Schreiners took an important step in their vineyards: they selected and planted a Blaufränkisch-PIWI variety explicitly for vinification. Owner History: Read more Gernot actually moved in from a different career. He graduated in computer science and tried his hand at studying computer science for a short time. The turn to viticulture took place promptly. He worked for about 15 years in a renowned winery in Rust, with which Hennry made his first but all the more succinct statement in the red wine sector in 2001 and finally started building an organic winery together with Victoria in 2007, both following their dream. Victoria is also switched her career, she originally studied social work. Through her love for Gernot, her love for wine has grew. Today she is a strong voice for planting resp. preservation of hedges, also a passionate ornithologist and responsible for the creative side and the customer contact of the winery. • Viña Ijalba

Read more At first glance this rather modern producer might seem to have little in common with its illustrious neighbor (Lopez de Heredia), but in fact María José was pleased to hear we would be representing the property. Ijalba has set the standard for environmental awareness in the region, from its organic production to its extensive re-cycling and environmental certification for the winery. The vineyards were all planted in disused quarries, which perhaps explains the remarkable minerality they are endowed with, especially the bigger reds with bottle age. The estate’s other distinction is the championing of the less-known varieties of Rioja such as the two Maturanas and Graciano. They have now unveiled some attractive new packaging to go with their never-ending efforts at improvement, spearheaded by long-time talented cellarmaster, Pepe, who absolutely excelled with his red wines in 2016. Viña Ijalba FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Viña Ijalba Country: Spain Region: Rioja City of Origin: Logroño Owner Name: Dionisio Ruiz Ijalba Vineyard Size: 222.30 acres Total Annual Production: 60,000 bottles Property History: Read more Viña Ijalba is the history of a family, as well as a commitment to the evolution of Rioja, from the day that Dionisio Ruiz planted his first vine in 1975 on an old gravel pit, which reproduced the natural conditions in which vines grow in La Rioja. And so began the pioneering road, innovative and clear, that Viña Ijalba has been travelling since then. Viña Ijalba has its own stories involving the transformation of gravel pits and open cast mines into new vinyeards, and the recovery of rare indigenous varieties of Rioja vines that had almost dissappeared. Owner History: Read more Dionisio Ruiz, Ijalba founder, is now 86 years old and he is a very important business man in Rioja with his open sky mine business. • Bercher

Read more The Kaiserstuhl can justifiably claim to be the single best-known district of Baden. Its volcanic soils and singularly warm climate give rise to powerful, vibrant Pinots of every type. Cousins Martin and Arne Bercher are the tenth generation of the family to run this highly-reputed estate, one of several we represent that are members of the VDP (indeed, Arne is V.P. of the Baden chapter). • Casal de Arman

Read more This new discovery comes from the González family, who had been making Ribeiro wines since the 19th century, but created this winery twenty years ago. In common with the best wines of the region, their vineyards are relatively high up, keeping the acid and freshness these varieties (hand-harvested Treixadura, Godello, Loureiro, Brencellao, Caíño and Sousón) require. The installation itself is hugely impressive. A grand 18th century hacienda meticulously restored and offering spacious and luxurious accommodation and a fine restaurant. It commands the Avia River valley, with its vineyards, terraced and otherwise, on all sides. The wine-making facility is compact but well-designed, having been built into a hillside, enabling gravity-feeding for all processes. The estate is on a constant mission to expand its holdings, with the aim of eventually reaching 40 hectares (24 are planted at present). They are particularly interested in older plots, some of which feature destroyed terraces that they are laboriously rebuilding. But they also do not shrink from uprooting wooded parcels, especially if they are planted to the dreaded mimosa, which has such an inimical effect on the vineyards. A spirit of exploration prevails, with compelling experiments in orange and amphora wines. Casal de Arman FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Casal de Arman Country: Spain Region: Ribiero Subregion: Ribeiro do Avia City of Origin: Ribeiro Date Founded: 1990's Vineyard Size: 20 HA Total Annual Production: 200,000 bottles Property History: Read more Casal de Armán was founded in the late 1990's by the González family, who have been making Ribeiro wines since the 19th century. The winery property is an 18th century court, located in San Andres, Ribadavia Ourense, in Northwest Spain, Galicia, with an old manor house that has been converted into a country hotel. A family owned winery with 50 acres of its own vineyards in the historic valley of the river Avia, D.O. Ribiero. The Vineyards are terraced along the Avia's river banks with heights ranging from 650-1500 feet above sea-level. Terraces include previously abondoned "socalcos", some over 100 years old, which the family is in the process of recovering. • Ch. de Fontarèche

Read more With a history dating back to the tenth century, the current domaine consists of 200 hectares that encircle a fortress constructed in the 12th century. It has been in the ownership of the Comte de Lamy’s family for nine generations, but there is nothing remotely antique about the methods they now employ. The 160 hectares planted to vine lie equally in Corbiere’s appellation and the surrounding IGP’s. The multiplicity of terroirs in this expansive terrain enables them to grow no fewer than 17 different varieties, including some interlopers. We, of course, have chosen to select an introductory range derived exclusively from autochthonous varieties. You will be impressed. Ch. de Fontarèche FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Ch. de Fontarèche Country: France Region: Languedoc Subregion: Aude City of Origin: Canet d'Aude Owner Name: Family De Lamy Vineyard Size: 140 HA Total Annual Production: 630,000 bottles Property History: Read more The first mention of Fontarèche can be found in a deed dated 984, in which Sieur ERMENGAUD, the Archbishop of Narbonne, granted someone named Sifrède ‘the smallholding known as Fontareche with the tower that is there, except for the church and ecclesiastical elements’ as an honorary fiefdom. He would feed sixteen knights every year. In 1201, the Archbishop of Narbonne commissioned a moated fortress in Fontarèche. An inventory of the Archbishop of Narbonne’s revenue and seigneurial rights which was drawn up in the second half of the 14th century notes for Fontarèche: ‘a fortified castle with keep and chapel, seigneurial and other land, vines purchased by Pierre de la Jugie (Archbishop of Narbonne from 1347 to 1375), a pasture, a meadow, a forest with rabbit warrens...’ Towards the late 17th century, Fontarèche acquired the status of a ‘specific seigneury’ and became the property of nobles. The LAMY family which now owns Fontarèche are descendants of the MIGNARD family, with Marie-Eulalie MIGNARD (who died there in 1943) the last owner to bear the Mignard name. • Bernhard

Read more This 600 year-old family estate is nominally in the Hessen but its soils, with their complex amalgam of porphyry, quarzite and loam, bear more resemblance to the Nahe, which is just over the hill. Hartmut Bernhard, the current proprietor, is an instinctive wine-grower and maker. He knows exactly what he is doing without intellectualising it. The estate has gone from strength to strength in recent years. Bernhard FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Bernhard Country: Germany Region: Rheinhessen City of Origin: Frei-Laubersheim Date Founded: around 1650 Owner Name: Hartmut Bernhard Vineyard Size: 11.5 HA Total Annual Production: 6,000 cases Property History: Read more The winery places a strong emphasis on the appreciation of its terroir, aligning its benefits with a keen commitment to quality. In spring, the grape vines undergo their initial pruning, followed by a second cut during the summer when the grapes begin to ripen. The "green harvest" in August involves the reduction of leaves and removal of immature fruit, channeling the vine's energy towards the carefully selected remaining grapes. Harvesting of sound grapes occurs from September to October, with a meticulous triage based on quality. Situated in a region with an orientation between south-east and south-west, the vineyards enjoy an optimal sun exposure. During the fall, a gentle mist often hovers over the hilly slopes of the Mainz Basin, a geological feature of the area, preventing the grape fields from succumbing to freezing temperatures. This microclimate, coupled with a diverse range of soils surrounding the village, contributes to the distinctive character of the wines—fruity, spicy, and full-bodied. A constant pursuit of harmony and a well-defined aromatic structure guides the winemaking process. This journey begins with meticulous clearing, followed by maturation in steel, oak, or barrique barrels sourced from France. Owner History: Read more Twelve generations ago, Hartmut's ancestors, originating from the Spanish Netherlands in a region known as Brabant, faced religious persecution, compelling them to emigrate. Utilizing their Gulden, they purchased vineyards, initiating the cultivation and trade of wine. In 1890, Hartmut's Great-Grandfather notably supplied wine to the government in barrels. Post World War II, his father transitioned to bottling wine, marking the inception of the present-day winery. In 1988, Terry Theise became involved and provided support to the estate. Hartmut and his wife Petra introduced modernized processes, venturing into the production of Sekt. Presently, their son Justus is upholding the family legacy, commencing in 2017 with his inaugural wine—a dry Scheurebe, which promptly sold out. While deeply rooted in tradition, the winery remains adaptable and open to innovative changes, demonstrating a nimble approach to evolving circumstances. • Eladio Pineiro

Read more Eladio Pineiro is one of the wine world’s great personalities and innovators. It is not often that one encounters a producer who truly re-invents a genre, but that is what he has done with his unique approach to lees-aging. A very recent visit also found him experimenting with aging a wine in the sea (a truly remarkable outcome there) and, after six years of experimentation, producing a sparkling Albariño by the ancestral method that would frankly put many a champagne to shame. Both of these original conceptions are now available for your discovery. The irrepressible Eladio is also the only producer we have met who employs not one but two full-time artists on his staff. The first, Daniel, is a talented cartoonist whose creations emblazon every new wine (including an annually changing label for Envidiacochina that is designed to track developments in the life of Eladio and his wife – some of which would be considered too racy in the U.S.A.). Daniel also designs all the packaging and publicity material, as well as serving as Eladio’s English interpreter. Eladio was one of the founders of large scale Albariño production in Spain with Mar de Frades in 1983, but left it all behind when his wife fell ill in 2003, selling the winery and keeping only a few prized vineyards. Now he dedicates himself to making artisanal hand-crafted Albariño (also hand-bottled and hand labeled….you get the drift) in the prime vineyard area of the Salnés Valley. Additionally, and most unusually, they make red wine in Portugal’s Alentejo, where they have a second home. Eladio also commissioned the unique and patented bottle shapes. Everything is bio-dynamic and the wines are as original as they sound. Don't miss them, and don't wait - total production is about 5,000 cases. Supported by his family, Eladio decided to take a step forward, doing what really excited, and motivates him, and started making wines again. By showing their roots and history, he produced a red from Portugese Alentejo, and whites from Albariño Rías Baixas, while having absolute freedom to create, and develop small amounts of real wine. Read more Founded in 1997 by chemist Yorgos Tsimbidi and his wife Elli, the winery lies a few kilometers from the other-worldly, eponymous Byzantine town of Monemvasia, which legend holds gave rise to the ubiquitous Malvasia grape. Part of their mission was to revive the tradition and fame of sweet Malvasia, which they have done with great success. But they have devoted equal attention to the local varieties Kydonitsa, Asproudi, Mavroudi and Limniona, among others. Now joined by daughters Marialena and Anastasia, their wines go from strength to strength, bringing well-earned acclaim. The labels are original and eye-catching, and some play off the legends of nearby Sparta. • Léguillette-Romelot

Read more The sleepy village of Charly on the very western frontier of Champagne, is home to a number of interesting producers, none more than this newly-discovered house. It was formed by the union of the two eponymous families in 1968, five years after they had joined together with other growers to form a co-operative in Charly. They remain members to this day, though the majority of their grapes are vinified in their own impressive facilities. Proprietors Laurent and Christine took over in 2000 and have always had a brisk trade on the domestic market, particularly with private customers. WineWise is actually their first American customer, and proud to be bringing their thoughtful range of diverse wines to the California market. The family, including the three children, are all keen amateur musicians – a fact reflected in the names of all their cuvées. The domaine covers 8.2 hectares of vines, which average 40 years of age, including a small plot around the house dedicated to three arcane varieties, called the Clos du Montdorin. The wines undergo systematic malolactic fermentation, and aging en tirage is longer than the average. We were impressed by the finesse and incisiveness across the board.. This is a house that exemplifies the strides being made by ambitious growers in the new era. We now have in stock a significantly increased assortment, so impressive are the current wines. They have divided their range into two lines : the “Classique”, made from the three Pinots, and “Cépages d’Autrefois”, which are based on or include the archaic varieties of Arbanne, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc. It should be noted that tragedy befell the family in the summer of 2018 when Laurent succumbed to illness at the unthinkable age of 45. Christine has taken over the reins and is showing great determination and optimism. This new assortment is testimony to her success.
