- Dom. Des 3 Cellier
Read more The Cellier (that really is their name!) family domaine goes back eight generations. Its current title alludes to the three brothers (and one sister-in-law) who took the reins from father Marc in 2007. 13 of their 14+ hectares of vines are distributed among no fewer than 24 parcels that are scattered throughout the appellation, including one 4 hectare plot in the northern Terres Blanches that makes an important contribution to the estate’s quality. The average age of their vines is 45 years. Viticulture has been certified organic by Ecocert for many years now. What attracted us to the wines was a sense of authenticity to accompany the flamboyance and power one comes to expect in modern examples of this storied appellation. They are also strikingly reasonable in price for their quality, even after the unexpected and unwelcome extension of the Trump Tariff to them. They make a nice counterpoint to the more classical wines of our Châteauneuf pioneer, Domaine du Banneret. Dom. Des 3 Cellier FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom. - Quinta das Bageiras
Read more The Alves Nuño family has run this 21 hectare estate for four generations. They used to sell the majority of their grapes to the well-known firm Caves San Joao, but went fully independent in 1989. Baga is the region’s claim to fame - a tannic, acidic and just plain old-fashioned grape which needs coaxing to express its charms. Our man Mário Sérgio Alves Nuño, now ably abetted by his son Frederico, makes Baga the traditional way, fermented in concrete lagares and aged in large, old oak ovals. With some age, it develops a stunningly expressive nose and is a powerfully structured wine perfect with the local specialty, roast suckling pig. We are now importing his sparkling wines as well, which represent 60% of his production. It should also be mentioned that Mário Sérgio is arguably Portugal’s finest distiller, and his long-aged vinegar is the stuff of legend. He is also one of the kindest and most generous people we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. It is a huge privilege to be his importer. Quinta das Bageiras FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Quinta das Bageiras Country: Portugal Region: Bairrada City of Origin: Fogueira Date Founded: 1989 Owner Name: Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno Vineyard Size: 30 HA Total Annual Production: 120,000 bottles Property History: Read more "There goes Fausto to his Bágeiras vineyard" That's how the population of Fogueira named the project I created in 1989. Fausto was my paternal grandfather, whose vineyards I collected with others from my maternal grandfather to establish the first wine company in Bairrada in over 20 years. With the paramount support of my father Abel, 12 hectares of vineyard that until then produced wine sold in bulk were transformed into wines bottled with our brand. Another 16 hectares were later added to the original vineyard area, always in the best Bairrada terroir. My belief was a simple one: I wanted the production of our wines to be accomplished through traditional methods, without ignoring the constant developments observed in the fields of viticulture and oenology. That is why, for example, all our grapes are handpicked, our red wines are produced in lagares without added yeasts and why our sparkling wines have no residual sugar. I believe quality means nothing without identity. Therefore, we respect wine as it respects us and we always devote ourselves to it as a family, with a passion that has lasted for three generations. - Tetramythos
Read more Another young winery founded in 1999 by the brothers Aristides and Eustatius Stathios Spanos, it offers a splendid range of impeccably made wines from both indigenous and international varietals at improbably low prices. The startling quality is greatly attributable to their stellar wine-maker, Panagiotis Pappagiannopoulos. The mindboggling vineyards rise to elevations of 1000 meters, ensuring that diurnal temperature range that is so often the lodestone of quality in Greece. Enjoying unique limestone soils and making wines only from free-run juice, Tetramythos offers a finesse and purity that are unexpected at this price level. The “Nature” series wines are made according to some biodynamic principles e.g. the whites are harvested, pressed and bottled on flower days, and the reds on fruit days. Panagiotis aims to make all his wines in this style in the coming years. We find the style so compelling that we have essentially adapted our range entirely to it. The vineyards are planted mostly with indigenous Greek along with some international grape varieties, and we practice strictly organic cultivation. Owner History: Read more The Spanos brothers, Aristos and Stathis, are locals who were involved in grape growing and wine production early in their lives. In 1999 they meet Panayiotis Papagiannopoulos, a talented and highly inspired winemaker (an dalso from the area!), who joined the team. In the years that followed they produced the first bottles of Tetramythos, planted new vineyards, and in 2003 began the construction of a tasteful winery which they completed in 2004. Their philosophy is to combine scientific knowledge and traditional methods in order to produce high quality wines, in the most natural possible way, with low intervention and no additives, to express the typicity of the special regional terroir. Read more We are delighted to introduce this ambitious 8 hectare estate to our champagne portfolio, having had our eye on it for some time now. Géraldine Lacourte and her husband Richard Desvignes took it over from her parents in 2007. They left the co-op in 2012, began an organic conversion in 2017 (certified since 2020) and are now almost finished with the further conversion to biodynamic viticulture. They present a compelling range of wines designed to showcase the surprisingly myriad possibilities offered by their 1er Cru vineyards in Écueil (which is coincidentally the home of Gracianne Marié, of Forest-Marié). The house-style might be described as extroverted, with most of the wines revelling in their generous fruit endowment and effortlessly supporting their prevalent dryness. - Claus Schneider
Read more There is nothing more gratifying in our line of work then finding good people making exceptional wine. The Schneider family are as genial and gracious a bunch of people as you could hope to meet and they make wines that are simply revelatory in their quality. Son Johannes, an old soul despite his tender years, has essentially taken over direction of the estate from his father Claus, and younger brother Christoph is fully involved, too. Most of their holdings are in the clay-and-limestone escarpment named Weiler Schlipf, butted right up against the Swiss border. The hallmarks of Schneider wines are purity and relaxation. The estate was recently hailed by the influential Gault-Millau magazine as being the single best value estate in all of Germany! In 2020, they started their formal conversion to organic certification, which will be accorded to them in 2022. The brothers have also developed a line of Natural Wines under the Haus Gupi label. Claus Schneider FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Claus Schneider Country: Germany Region: Baden - Markgräflerland Subregion: Markgräflerland City of Origin: Weil am Rhein Date Founded: 1892 Owner Name: Claus Schneider Vineyard Size: 13 HA Total Annual Production: 80,000 bottles Property History: Read more The estate was farmed as a mixed agricultural estate for generations. In the 1980s Claus Schneider changed the estate to beeing a wine producing business only. There remain still some orchards and farmland still worked by the family or leased to other farmers. In the last 30 years the wine producing area was doubled in size beeing today a total surface of 13ha. The winery is still located in the 18th century housing in the old center of the village. The two single vineyards farmed by the family are Weiler Schlipf and Ötlinger Sonnhole both located on the Tüllinger Hill which has a total vineyard area of 100 ha. The Sonnhole is a south oriented vineyard with purely clay soil. The Schlipf has a South-west orientation and clay / limestone soil. The wines from Schlipf are our most complex and structured wines suited for bottle aging. Owner History: Read more Claus Schneider was educated in the winegrowers school of Weinsberg in Württemberg. He then quickly took over the estate from his father in the 1980s. Together with his wife Susanne they've been running the property for some 30 years. Since two years Johannes and Christoph are in charge of the business. Johannes studied 5 years of chemistry. He then worked on year in Burgundy at Domaine Rossignol-Trapet where he received a BTS diploma. After that he worked for 1 more year in France in Alsace / Domaine Boesch and the Minervois / Domaine Courbissac. After his studies of economics Christoph recently joined the winery. - Dom. Bunan
Read more The Bunan family, without fanfare or hyperbole, have quietly become the single largest proprietors in the increasingly well-regarded appellation of Bandol. Unlike many of their neighbours, they have not rushed headlong into a love-affair with new oak, but have judiciously employed it as a fine chef might use seasoning. The wines – across the board – show a sober respect for tradition allied to an openness to change. Their vineyards are now certified organic and they have begun the process of bio-dynamic conversion. Their red Bandols age very well, and the Kosher wine is a category-leader. Many satisfied customers have commented on the reasonableness of the prices. Dom. Bunan FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom. - Aphros
Read more What more do you need to know than that Vasco Croft, an architect, educator and devotee of Rudolf Steiner, discovered the mysteries of wine in his mid-thirties through the intervention of a Brazilian Buddhist monk? From there you intuit that the path leads directly to starting a winery and farming biodynamically, right? We are proud to be the first to import his wines into the USA, but he has already blazed a trail through the English press, with luminaries like Jamie Goode and Sara Ahmed leading the praise. In person he is as vivid, energetic and unbuttoned as his wines. Endlessly restless, he is currently engaged in an ambitious project to create a cultural center/restaurant and a food forest on his recently expanded estate. He reminds us of Stéphane Tissot in his endless quest to find new wines to express his burgeoning curiosity. Several of these are featured in the expansive selection below, notably the Phaunus, Melissae and Ouranos. A recent visit to the estate found it operating at ever-dizzier levels of refinement and class. Much of the credit for this steep ascent must be given to Vasco’s cellar-master (and now business partner) Miguel Abreu, a man of exceptional lucidity and purpose who sees vinous possibilities that elude others and knows how to achieve them. Aphros FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Aphros Country: Portugal Region: Vinho Verde Subregion: Lima City of Origin: Ponte de Lima and Arcos de Valdevez Date Founded: 2004 Owner Name: Vasco Croft Vineyard Size: 44.46 HA Total Annual Production: 8300 Cases Property History: Read more Aphros winery is the brainchild of Lisbon architect Vasco Croft who decided to explore his passion for wine in a XVII century family estate located in the Vinho Verde Region. Interested in Steiner’s philosophy since his youth, and having led the Waldorf education movement in Portugal for many years, he naturally followed the path of biodynamics. Mountain horses, sheep, bees and special water cascades are part of the farm life. The vines, carefully managed through cover crops, are treated with home made plant extracts. Being made from brandy, these preparations have their origin in the same vines they are destined to treat. The wines, ranging from still to classic method sparkling and Pet Nats, are based on local varieties Loureiro and Vinhão and made with low intervention protocols, using only indigenous yeasts and a minimum of sulphites. They have achieved worldwide recognition and are distributed in over 20 countries in all continents. In 2015 Vasco opened two new cellars; one contemporary cellar dedicated to the classical range of wines and a medieval cellar for the production of artisanal wines in amphorae without the use of electricity, under the brand Phaunus. Owner History: Read more Born in Lisbon with an inclination for metaphysics, Vasco thought of being an astrologer in his teens, then decided to become an architect. In his twenties he discovered Steiner’s philosophy, and went on to study pedagogy and sculpture in England, where he also discovered an interest in woodworking and furniture design. On his return to Portugal, he led the Waldorf movement for many years alongside with his own furniture design company. In his thirties he had a life changing encounter with a Buddhist monk, where a bottle of wine was shared. This event, taken by Vasco as a personal meeting with Dionysus, led him in 2003 to start a wine project in Casal do Paço, a semi-abandoned property belonging to his family since the 17th century. A confessed convert to Biodynamics and Dionysism, there are (undeserved!) suspicions that Vasco is a Faun in disguise, living a delightful decadent life in the winery surrounded by beautiful Nymphs – while wishing this would be true, he tries to cope with the manifold hardships of running a winery. Read more This ancient family firm has become a dependable source for some heart-warmingly traditional examples of Alsace wines. In recent years, they have systematically converted all their own holdings to certified organic viticulture, though they continue to buy a significant proportion of other grapes from long-term partners. The wines are full-flavored, varietally distinct and properly dry. They offer a price-quality ratio that is hard to beat. Read more I have admired this house since encountering a delicious 1976 vintage on an early visit to Champagne. The holdings are all in the villages of Moussy and Pierry, just south of Épernay and just above the start of the Côte des Blancs. Their spacious buildings are testimony to the scale of their former operations. Now they are content to sell off the majority of their grapes to other houses while retaining the best for themselves, all of which are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Production is now down to a scant 50,000 bottles a year, and they show no hurry to sell anything! One of the attractions is their considerable library of old vintages for sale, including the Mathusalems of 1990, of which we always seem to sell out! R. Renaudin FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: R. Renaudin Country: France Region: Champagne Subregion: Coteaux Sud Epernay City of Origin: Moussy Date Founded: 1724 Owner Name: Mr. Dominique Tellier Vineyard Size: 12 HA Total Annual Production: 20,000 bt/year Property History: Read more Time Honoured Renown: the Renaudin family, successors to the prestigious lineage of the "Seigneur des Conardins", Pierre Comte de Failly since 1724.Production of Quality Champagne, with larges reserves : the cellars of the Champagne house Renaudin hold 4 years of stock which come solely from our vineyards. These cover 24 hectares (58 acres) and they are located on the most covoted slopes of Epernay and the Côte des Blancs. Quality : this starts from the time of harvesting right up the moment of labelling. This is all done in the pure champagne tradition. Thanks to its structure, vineyards, and production capacity, Champagne Renaudin is among the finest middle-sized properties (after the large Champagne Houses). The Renaudin signature is a pledge to customers and friends, alike. The Renaudin family takes the head of this historic champagne Estate after Pierre Louis, Comte de Failly since 1724, who belong to the prestigious Seigneurs des Conardins. The spirit or R.Renaudin champagne is to let time take its course. The vinyards located on the south of Epernay’s hills are worked in a way that respects nature and is based on a sustainable viticulture. Their wines are mainly blended with Chardonnay Premier Cru and Millesimes of over 10 years of age, keeping all their freshness thanks to a specific winemaking process. Their characer is expressed though the strikingly fruity and mature aromas, as well as the delicacy of their effervescence and their distinctive bottling : a singularity in the Champagne region. Thes soils make up the parcels we call Frênes, Pierres et de la Touche. -Silt and sand soils can be found in our Hauts- Noyers and Clos du Verger parcels. Each grape is planted in the terroir that allows for maximum expression of complexity for the grape. We have land in the following areas-- : - L'AOC Touraine Amboise, wheere we have planted Chenin for the whites, allowing for delicate and yet rich wines, and in red the Côt where structure, finesse, and ageability are paramount. - L'AOC, TOURAINE shows off the Sauvignon blanc expressing the minerality of our terroir. For many years now we have also grown an old variety,« Fié Gris », from an old strain of Sauvignon. It is characteristically rich, unctous, and floral, while remaining surprisingly delicate. We work in a sustainable and responsible way,and intervene in the vineyard solely in extreme situations of climactic risk. This avoids harming the ecosystem and the lives of men.In the cave we adapt our vinification according to the needs of the terroir and the grape to maximize their elegance and structure.. We work carefully with a tractor along the row, in such a way as to favor biodiversity in our parcels. we maintain grass and weeds in the rows to limit erosion, and to keep the vigor of the vine in control to prevent to high a yeild, but mow regularly to keep it under control.
