- Dom. Bunan
Read more The Bunan family, without fanfare or hyperbole, have quietly become the single largest proprietors in the increasingly well-regarded appellation of Bandol. Unlike many of their neighbours, they have not rushed headlong into a love-affair with new oak, but have judiciously employed it as a fine chef might use seasoning. The wines – across the board – show a sober respect for tradition allied to an openness to change. Their vineyards are now certified organic and they have begun the process of bio-dynamic conversion. Their red Bandols age very well, and the Kosher wine is a category-leader. Many satisfied customers have commented on the reasonableness of the prices. Dom. Bunan FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom. Read more What more do you need to know than that Vasco Croft, an architect, educator and devotee of Rudolf Steiner, discovered the mysteries of wine in his mid-thirties through the intervention of a Brazilian Buddhist monk? From there you intuit that the path leads directly to starting a winery and farming biodynamically, right? We are proud to be the first to import his wines into the USA, but he has already blazed a trail through the English press, with luminaries like Jamie Goode and Sara Ahmed leading the praise. In person he is as vivid, energetic and unbuttoned as his wines. Endlessly restless, he is currently engaged in an ambitious project to create a cultural center/restaurant and a food forest on his recently expanded estate. He reminds us of Stéphane Tissot in his endless quest to find new wines to express his burgeoning curiosity. Several of these are featured in the expansive selection below, notably the Phaunus, Melissae and Ouranos. A recent visit to the estate found it operating at ever-dizzier levels of refinement and class. Much of the credit for this steep ascent must be given to Vasco’s cellar-master (and now business partner) Miguel Abreu, a man of exceptional lucidity and purpose who sees vinous possibilities that elude others and knows how to achieve them. Aphros FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Aphros Country: Portugal Region: Vinho Verde Subregion: Lima City of Origin: Ponte de Lima and Arcos de Valdevez Date Founded: 2004 Owner Name: Vasco Croft Vineyard Size: 44.46 HA Total Annual Production: 8300 Cases Property History: Read more Aphros winery is the brainchild of Lisbon architect Vasco Croft who decided to explore his passion for wine in a XVII century family estate located in the Vinho Verde Region. Interested in Steiner’s philosophy since his youth, and having led the Waldorf education movement in Portugal for many years, he naturally followed the path of biodynamics. Mountain horses, sheep, bees and special water cascades are part of the farm life. The vines, carefully managed through cover crops, are treated with home made plant extracts. Being made from brandy, these preparations have their origin in the same vines they are destined to treat. The wines, ranging from still to classic method sparkling and Pet Nats, are based on local varieties Loureiro and Vinhão and made with low intervention protocols, using only indigenous yeasts and a minimum of sulphites. They have achieved worldwide recognition and are distributed in over 20 countries in all continents. In 2015 Vasco opened two new cellars; one contemporary cellar dedicated to the classical range of wines and a medieval cellar for the production of artisanal wines in amphorae without the use of electricity, under the brand Phaunus. Owner History: Read more Born in Lisbon with an inclination for metaphysics, Vasco thought of being an astrologer in his teens, then decided to become an architect. In his twenties he discovered Steiner’s philosophy, and went on to study pedagogy and sculpture in England, where he also discovered an interest in woodworking and furniture design. On his return to Portugal, he led the Waldorf movement for many years alongside with his own furniture design company. In his thirties he had a life changing encounter with a Buddhist monk, where a bottle of wine was shared. This event, taken by Vasco as a personal meeting with Dionysus, led him in 2003 to start a wine project in Casal do Paço, a semi-abandoned property belonging to his family since the 17th century. A confessed convert to Biodynamics and Dionysism, there are (undeserved!) suspicions that Vasco is a Faun in disguise, living a delightful decadent life in the winery surrounded by beautiful Nymphs – while wishing this would be true, he tries to cope with the manifold hardships of running a winery. - Methymnaeos
Read more This, our first island producer, comes from the home of Sappho herself. Yannis Lambrou is quite a character, with a fiercely original approach to wine and life. We especially enjoyed watching him take on not just the bureaucrats of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture but the high Paladins in Brussels itself over the ridiculous pregnancy warning symbol that Europe wants on wine labels but the U.S.A. does not. He gave them one week to come up with an answer – and they did! Unfortunately, it was not the one he wanted to hear. Still, it gave us a flavor of the man. The estate was the first modern Lesbian estate, although the island was exalted for its wines in ancient times. Phylloxera wiped the vine out at the end of the 19th century, so when the Lambrou family revived the almost-extinct Chidiriotiko grape on their ancestral property, it marked a dramatic turning point in Greece’s viticultural history. The situation is unique – the crater of an extinct volcano that used to be home to the famed petrified forest of Lesvos. The lava soil is fantastically rich in mineral content, particularly sulphur, which enables them to follow a strictly organic regime with relative ease. All this novelty aside, we would not have bought the wines if we were not struck by their exceptional quality. Methymnaeos FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Methymnaeos Country: Greece Region: Aegean Subregion: Lesvos City of Origin: Chidira. A remote village, not a city. Date Founded: 1985 Owner Name: Yannis Lambrou Vineyard Size: 5.68 acres Total Annual Production: 15-20,000 bottles Property History: Read more According to Archestratus (4th century BC), an ancient poet and connoisseur, the wine of Lesvos was the best of antiquity: I can praise the wines produced in many places And their names I do not forget But no wine is compared to the wine of Lesvos (quoted by Athenaeus, Deipnosophistae, A, 52d) Unfortunately, the famous, age-old winemaking tradition of Lesvos came to an end in the beginning of the 20th century because of phylloxera's arrival to the island. This vine-root eating bug had been spreading from its native America almost everywhere since the middle of the 19th century. The remedy against phylloxera in most parts of the world was to graft vines on rootstock resistant to the bug. However, Lesvos by the end of the 19th century had specialized in ouzo, made from alcohol produced elsewhere, so vineyards on the island were abandoned when hit by phylloxera. In the early 1980s the Lambrou family discovered the last remaining vines of an old grape of Lesvos near Chidira, a forgotten village of the island. The grape, named after the village Chidiriotiko, was replanted in 1985 by the Lambrou family in their private estate, located in the crater of the extinct volcano close to Chidira. The lava of this volcano had once created the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. Owner History: Read more In 1997 the Lambrou family completed construction of Methymnaeos Winery, located, too, in Chidira. The first bottles of Methymnaeos Organic Wine, of the harvest of 1997, came out of the winery's production line in 1999. This was the first bottled wine in the history of Lesvos. Nowdays Yannis Lambrou, son of the family, makes wine at Methymnaeos Winery from his own grapes and the grapes of other local vine growers, who, following the steps of the Lambrou family, have decided to replant and recultivate Chidiriotiko. Read more This pocket-sized estate is now in its third generation, but has only sold its own label for twenty years. Young Giorgios Diamantakos is well-trained and ambitious and offers what are arguably the most dramatic wines we offer from this region. Total production averages 1000 cases! Diamantakos FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Diamantakos Country: Greece Region: Naousa Subregion: Mandemi City of Origin: Naoussa Date Founded: 1998 Owner Name: Diamantakou Aikaterini Vineyard Size: 10 acres Total Annual Production: 20,000 Property History: Read more In 1968, ruins were found on Diamantakos’s land, which later proved to be Aristotle’s school, where Alexander the Great was taught. The government compensated the family for the land and they bought what now is the Diamantakos 'Ktima' vineyards and winery. The vineyards consist of two indigenous Greek grape varietals, Xinomavro and Preknadi. Owner History: Read more George Diamantakos is the third generation winemaker. Read more We renewed contact with this old estate at a sad point, shortly after the untimely death of young proprietor Jean-Marc Vergnes. His widow, Isabelle, wanted to carry on the domaine, but finally decided to take on new partners, as she has young children. We are optimistic that the quality-mindedness of this superb producer of sparkling wines will not change. Limoux is arguably the first place in France to have invented sparkling wine. Its limestone soils and markedly cooler climate make it apt for this category. The price-quality ratio is amazing. Read more We have never been particular fans of Malbec’s expression in Cahors, but this recent discovery caused us to re-examine our prejudices. Benoit Aymard took over the small estate founded by his grandfather as recently as 2014. Previously, he served for many years as Maître de Chai for Georges Vigouroux, the man who put Cahors back on the map last century. He did not want to reinvent the wheel, so to speak, but he was interested in putting his own stamp on the family’s traditional wines. The land he inherited is already very complex geologically-speaking, and also relatively steep for the region. But he recently planted some very sparse parcels at 260 meters in elevation on limestone-rich soils dating to the Kimmeridgean era. Read more We were tremendously excited to discover this dynamic Catalan producer based in the famous town of Manresa. Under the leadership of young Ramon Roqueta since 2006, it has achieved great acclaim in Spain and has embarked on a series of acquisitions and refurbishments designed to recreate some of the glory of the long and illustrious past of its forbears, who can trace a family wine history back to 1199. Among the several projects that they run, we were especially drawn to two : LaFou Celler and Joan Sardà. Read more Our favorite way to meet new producers is to have them recommended by our friends. So when Michi Moosbrugger of Schloss Gobelsburg said that he knew this “crazy guy in the Mosel” making great wines, our ears pricked up. The connection between them is famed Douro producer Dirk Neepoort, whose son Daniel lived with the Kettern family in Piesport for four vintages, followed now by his brother Marco. Together they have a project called Fio, making “Natural Wines” that challenge the old order and which we are now bringing in for the first time. Under the Kettern label, they offer the tried and true classics. In the 2020 Gault Millau Guide, Fio was anointed “Discovery of the Year” and both estates were promoted to 3.5 and 3 stars respectively. Schildknecht has also reviewed the wines most favorably, so we have a tiger by the tail, and you read about it here first! The estate was founded in the 1950’s by Lothar, but son Philipp has been in charge since 2009. To describe him as iconoclastic is an understatement. There is a paradox at work in Piesport which is that the easy-to-cultivate but inferior flatland vineyards on one side of the river cost much more than the fabled steep slopes of the Goldtröpfchen bowl on the other. But Philipp is a maniac for quality, so he traded almost all the land bought by his father for more challenging but infinitely more rewarding parcels in the Goldtröpfchen, including some in the great Falkenberg portion and other higher parts whose cooler micro-climates accord better with his aims. In the last year, he has expanded into Leiwen, buying parcels in the great Josefsberg vineyard, as well as increasing his holdings in Piesport. He has converted the estate to something approaching organic viticulture, while pushing the envelope with Fio and its low-sulphur wines. He has also converted most of his production to dry and off-dry wines, while maintaining the noble tradition of classically sweet Mosels to the manner born. In short, he offers us something of everything – bone Lothar Kettern, Fio FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Lothar Kettern, Fio Country: Germany Region: Mosel Subregion: Rheinland-Pfalz City of Origin: Piesport Owner Name: Phillip Kettern Vineyard Size: 16.5 HA Property History: Read more Our winery continues a centuries-long viticultural tradition began by the current winemaker's (Phillip Kettern) father over the last several decades. Jaded over the years by a succession of uninteresting Vouvrays, we called “Eureka” on tasting this beautiful line-up. Read more This is, of course, anything but a “new” estate to many of us, since we proudly represented Stefan Justen and his jewel-like property for the two decades or so that we were the California distributors of Terry Theise. Stefan was always one of our favorite German producers, and we had a special affinity for his approach, which straddled the classic Mosel paradigm of filigree, featherlight Riesling and something a little more robust and rich. In short, we would describe his wines as lusty, but entirely faithful to the Mosel tradition. His holdings are largely in the vertiginous Grand Cru sites of Erden – the Treppchen and the Prälat. But he also has vines slightly down-river in Lösnich and Kinheim. Notable also is the Roman wine-press excavated at the bottom of the Treppchen which Stefan loves to show and explain to visitors. We have stayed in touch over the years and were therefore elated when he told us that he was once again available to us in California. The hard part was deciding what to leave behind, so compelling was the range he proposed. We think that you will find this to be a judicious representation of Stefan’s mastery of both the modern dry and classical sweet idioms. The prices are beyond reasonable, and the aging potential of these wines is a given. We still have a few cases in stock of older vintages, for those who are interested. Please inquire. In the year 1802 it became part of secularization by Napoleon, like many ecclesiastical estates into bourgeois hands. In 1804, Johann Joseph and Bernard Joseph Schmitges acquired the Meulenhof. The Meulenhof was taken over in 1950 by their son Heinz Justen and since 1990 his son Stefan manages the Meulenhof. Many generations of Meulenhof’s “winemakers“ have dedicated themselves to produce a high quality product - and since 1900, Meulenhof is a member of the Bernkasteler Ring, a well-known wine auctioneer. Read more This family-owned winery makes highly individual wines in a style essentially unchanged since its inception in 1877. They grow all their grapes using organic methods, ferment using only natural yeasts and do not filter their wines. They employ four full-time coopers to make their barrels. Gravonia, Tondonia, Bosconia and Cubillo are all individual vineyards which have been in the family for generations. Patience is a family watchword, as this bodega thinks nothing of waiting twenty years before releasing a wine. Their “Crianzas” are aged like others’ “Reservas” and “Gran Reservas”; the “Reservas” as long as others’ top “Gran Reservas”. And the ultimate accolade of “Gran Reserva” is accorded to only the very greatest vintages. Rarely are there more than three of these in a decade. These are uniquely traditional Riojas of massive, boundary-crossing repute. Both red and white are capable of staggering longevity. We are immensely proud to represent them. The only rub is that the estate’s uniqueness has now become universally recognised with a resultant run on stocks. Even with the producer’s necessity to raise prices, the prices remain entirely reasonable for uniquely great wines sold at peak maturity. López de Heredia FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: López de Heredia Country: Spain Region: Rioja Date Founded: 1877 Vineyard Size: 170 HA Property History: Read more Founded in 1877, López de Heredia stands out as one of the few worldwide wineries that respect, and adheres to core principles taught by their ancestors. “Perhaps no winery in the world guards its traditions as proudly and steadfastly as López de Heredia does… it is paradoxically a winery in the vanguard, its viticulture and wine-making a shining, visionary example for young, forward-thinking producers all over the world… At López de Heredia, there is serenity that comes with adherence to core principles…” August 12th, 2009 by Eric Asimov, The New York Times Owner History: Read more Based on the knowledge acquired in his relationship with the French businessmen residing in Haro and supported by his trade and accounting studies during his stay in Bayona, Mr. Rafael López de Heredia and Landeta began a winemaking process, once that the Bordeaux businessmen had returned to their country; departure motivated by the change in tariff and customs policy, which made it very difficult to export wine to France. For this reason D. Rafael decides to drill the Calado, to obtain an underground space where to stack the barrels in which the aging of his wines begins. Already in that moment of the closing of the French borders, in 1892, our founder had foreseen to elaborate wine, first with grapes coming from the vineyards of the region and later, Selection and love. Two words that became the Bible of their wines, a maxim that R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia has been and is preaching for more than a century. Read more The Cellier (that really is their name!) family domaine goes back eight generations. Its current title alludes to the three brothers (and one sister-in-law) who took the reins from father Marc in 2007. 13 of their 14+ hectares of vines are distributed among no fewer than 24 parcels that are scattered throughout the appellation, including one 4 hectare plot in the northern Terres Blanches that makes an important contribution to the estate’s quality. The average age of their vines is 45 years. Viticulture has been certified organic by Ecocert for many years now. What attracted us to the wines was a sense of authenticity to accompany the flamboyance and power one comes to expect in modern examples of this storied appellation. They are also strikingly reasonable in price for their quality, even after the unexpected and unwelcome extension of the Trump Tariff to them. They make a nice counterpoint to the more classical wines of our Châteauneuf pioneer, Domaine du Banneret. Dom. Des 3 Cellier FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom.
