- Freiherr von Gleichenstein
Read more This is a 500 year-old estate with monastic origins currently run by the young and dynamic Johannes von Gleichenstein, who impishly calls his top wine “Baron Philipp”, on the grounds that they are a noble family and Philipp is his son’s name. One suspects that he would welcome a lawsuit from the Rothschilds of Bordeaux, with all its attendant publicity! However, even without that, the wines are deserving of attention, offering fidelity to their soils and very good value. Freiherr von Gleichenstein FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Freiherr von Gleichenstein Country: Germany Region: Baden - Kaiserstuhl Subregion: Kaiserstuhl City of Origin: Oberrotweil im Kaiserstuhl Owner Name: Johannes Freiherr von Gleichenstein Vineyard Size: 50 HA Total Annual Production: 350,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: Read more All the virtues of Schneider’s Weiler Schlipf Spätburgunder are rendered here in a form that is simply a little finer and richer. Vibrant, suave and stylish Pinot Noir with the rooty qualities that one hopes for from the grape and a degree of concentration that commands attention. Owner History: Read more Already from his childhood on Johannes Freiherr von Gleichenstein was accompanied by the topic winegrowing. He grew up at the Kaiserstuhl winery and it was a duty for him and his siblings to work for the company. At the same time it was a good opportunity to earn an extra income in addition to their pocket money. Thus, as an adolescent he discovered his love for working in and with nature and his enthusiasm for the product wine which requires much care, attention, patience and fostering. At the age of sixteen he was certain that he wanted to do something with wine as a profession. Following his high school graduation Johannes Freiherr von Gleichenstein completed an apprenticeship as a winegrower. After that he studied oenology at Geisenheim. Following a wine cellar internship he underwent a training as state-certified technician for viticulture and cellaring. In 2002 he and his wife, Christina Freifrau von Gleichenstein, took over Weingut Freiherr von Gleichenstein from his father, Hans-Joachim Freiherr von Gleichenstein, in the eleventh generation. As far as wine is concerned, the 44 years old sets high importance in quality. For that he invests as well in professional wine training and advice as in cellar technology in order to age the wine as gentle and near-natural as possible. ‘I am convinced that a winery of our size and with our structure can only survive in the long run if it stands out because of highest quality’, says Freiherr Johannes von Gleichenstein. ‚Furthermore, I am my most demanding critic and my own wine must also meet my personal taste. Therefore the quality must be right‘, he adds with a smile. Up to date the Kaiserstuhl wines have a low degree of international recognition. With premium products from their own winery Johannes and Christina von Gleichenstein want to change that in the future. Christina Freifrau von Gleichenstein is responsible for marketing, human resources management and administration at the winery. The skilled legal assistant is a member of Vinissima, Frauen und Wein e.V. and since 2014 she is also a local councillor at Oberrotweil. The couple lives at the winery with their two sons. Read more I passed through Ribeira Sacra a good fifteen years ago, and was captivated by the beautiful vineyards perched high above the Miño River, and the ethereal perfume of the Mencia grape in my glass. So I was thrilled to be back again in 2015. My host was Rubén Moure, who works with small plots of old vines, using cool fermentations to extract maximum fruit from both white grapes and Mencia. He inherited vineyards from his grandfather, but has only had the winery in Pantón since 2008. This is a producer with interesting collaborations in other areas and a lot of ambition. - Dom. des Grabottes
Read more Former chef Jonathan Garnier decided in 2015 to return to the region of his childhood and establish a small domaine, which today extends to all of four hectares. Lyon, of course, is known as France’s gastronomic capital, but the wine appellation around it is hardly known outside the area. Being close to Beaujolais, it is no surprise that the dominant grapes are Gamay, Aligoté and Chardonnay. But Jonathan’s vines are actually closer to Vienne than to Mâcon. Consequently, the expression of Gamay is really quite singular, and offers a fascinating counterpoint to the more familiar profiles of the famed Beaujolais crus. Dom. des Grabottes FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom. des Grabottes Country: France Region: Burgundy Subregion: Coteaux du Lyonnais City of Origin: Millery until 2022 and now Chaponost Date Founded: 2015 Owner Name: Garnier Jonathan Vineyard Size: 5 HA Total Annual Production: 10,000-12,000 bottles Property History: Read more The Domaine des Grabottes was created in 2015 by Jonathan Garnier, a young independent winemaker [graduated from Macon Davayé in 2015, Burgundy]. From a surface area of 1.2 Ha at start, it has since expanded to 5 Ha. Since the creation of the estate, the vines have been worked according to the principles of organic farming, without the use of synthetic chemical, with weeding carried out solely by working the soil. The vineyard is therefore currently transitioning to organic labelling and only a few parcels are not integrated in this process yet. Interested by biodynamic agriculture, Jonathan Garnier began testing this method in 2016 before generalizing the practices across the whole vineyard in 2017. He follows the principles of biodynamism and could enter a certification process in the mid- to long-term, but does not plan to do so at this stage, as the vineyard is still recent. The vines are divided over 3 sites in the South-West of Lyon, with two terroirs which are very characteristic. In the municipality of Taluyers, located on the foothills of the Monts du Lyonnais, themselves on the eastern edge of the Massif Central, you find granite and gneiss soils, particularly draining, which brings fruit, finesse and balance to the wines. The other plots, distributed over two other municipalities, are located mostly on ice moraines, with deeper, clay-loam soils, containing a large quantity of rolled pebbles, which gives more density and structure to the wines. As he works alone on the estate, Jonathan preferred to keep a reasonable surface of vines so that he could manage them accurately and avoid excessive mechanization. He tries to make as few tractor passages as possible in order to limit soil settlement and respect biodiversity. The health of the vineyards comes first, in order to obtain grapes of the best quality. This allows in turn to harvest them manually, to respect the integrity of the bunch of grapes and then vinify them in whole bunches, a signature technique of the estate. As far as grape varieties are concerned, the black Gamay with white juice is the only one used for the production of red wines. Most of the vines of this variety were planted in the 50s and 70s, guaranteeing a mature and high-quality plot. The white wines are produced in very small quantities, with grape varieties Chardonnay and Aligoté from younger vines, planted in the 80s. Jonathan plans to develop Chardonnay's plantations with mass selection, in order to develop the white plot of the estate. Owner History: Read more John began his professional career as a chef in 2005. Passionate about wines and winemaking from the very start, he decided to make a career change to work as a wine merchant in 2011. In 2014, he felt the need to get closer to the vineyard and went back to study an advanced technician’s certificate in winemaking in Mâcon-Davayé (Burgundy). Since 2015, he has started his own wine estate, located in the Lyon wine region. Wines By Dom. des Grabottes Dom. des Grabottes 2019 "Les Grabottines" View Wine

Read more Maria and her husband Manfred run this pocket-sized (approximately 6 hectares) estate near Spitz, in the western part of the Wachau. Her family has links to the property that go back 300 years, when it was owned by St. Peter’s Stift in Salzburg. Her great-grandfather bought it from the church in 1931 after the financial crash obliged it to cash out. She has quietly been making wines of exemplary quality at moderate prices since taking over and has achieved increasing recognition in the Austrian wine press. The vineyard practices are solidly organic : composting, eschewal of herbicides and insecticides, feromonal pest-control, and leaving alternate vineyard rows unmown. Using minimal sulphur (below 5.5 gm) is another hallmark. The wines are sleek and pure, but also show flashes of Wachau grandeur without excess. The prices are truly exceptional. Read more The Jourdan family has been established in Sommières, between Nîmes and Montpellier, since 1937. Endowed with an unusually high percentage of old vines, they make an array of blessedly old-fashioned and unaffected wines exclusively from grape varieties indigenous to the region. All wines are fermented and aged in concrete vats. They make a special point of not releasing their wines until they consider them ready to drink. Such resistance to the “latest vintage” syndrome naturally endears them to us. But, more importantly, we were utterly convinced by the purity and restraint of their various cuvées, which really offer something new and different to the range of Languedoc wines. Ch. Read more There are few rules when it comes to building a portfolio, but one gold standard is that if you start with quality, you will attract more of the same. Fílipa is good friends with Alvaro Castro and Mário Sérgio (not to mention Heidi Schröck), Vasco Croft loves her wines, and you can guess the rest. This daughter of legendary Bairrada producer Luis Pato began by producing wines in the larger appellation of Beiras (and the Dão). She purchased a small winery in Bairrada, which she has now significantly expanded (by digging downwards!). Eventually, it is assumed, she will reunite with her father’s estate, but, in the meantime, she has carved a big international name for herself by dint of her strikingly expressive and honest wines, so reflective of her own character. Joined now by her husband, renowned Belgian sommelier Willem Wouters, they have enthusiastically embraced the rigours of bio-dynamism. They have been steadily buying up new parcels of land, all within 10 km. of the home-base, some planted to old vines, others being replanted with massal selections. The estate is up to 15 hectares now, with a final goal of 22. As you can see, they constantly sell out. Fílipa Páto FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Fílipa Páto Country: Portugal Region: Beiras City of Origin: Ois do Bairro (the center of our wine universe, a village of 200 people) Date Founded: 2001 Owner Name: Filipa Pato & William Wouters Vineyard Size: 15 HA Total Annual Production: 80,000-100,000 bottles Property History: Read more As when we started we didn't have any vineyards, we bought grapes from different locations in Bairrada, this to better understand the potential of the different "terroirs"... This why we called our wines "Ensaios", "try-outs". We were trying to feel all the different sites. From the beginning we focussed on indigenous grapes. For whites these were : Bical, Cercial, Arinto and Maria Gomes. For red the typical "Baga" grape, the King of Bairrada. In 2006 we bought our first vineyards and since then, almost every year, we invested in vineyards, mainly centennial ones. We were blessed to find one even more than 130 years old, a pre-phylloxera vineyard "Missao". Today we have 15ha in production and 5 more ha in the future (we planted them new in 2017). Since the beginning we worked without herbicides and since 5 years now, fully biodynamic. In the beginning we started making wine in the cellar of the grandfather of Filipa. In 2016 we moved everything to our new build winery in Ois do Bairro and we are expanding the building to optimize and improve our work even more. The future looks bright as there is more demand for the authentic wines without makeup! Owner History: Read more Filipa Pato, coming from a wine dynasty in Bairrada, is a graduate of the University of Coimbra as a chemical engineer and refined her winemaker skills doing harvests in Bordeaux, Mendoza and Margaret River. William Wouters chef/sommelier/restaurateur comes from a restaurateur family from Antwerp, Belgium. He's a sommelier champion (restaurateur and former head chef of the Belgian national soccer team on the world cup in Brazil (2014) and the European cup in France (2016). Together Filipa & William share all their experiences: the love for food and wine, encounters with great wine growers, sommeliers and wine lovers from all over the world and the magical, inexhaustible culture of the world of wine. We really believe that Baga from Bairrada is probably the most terroir driven single varietal grape from Portugal! More and more international journalists and sommeliers are pointing this out! Thanks to their support we are exporting now to almost 30 countries. In 2011 Filipa was elected "Newcomer of the Year" by the main German magazine "Der Feinschmecker". The Nossa Calcario Baga 2015 was the first ever single varietal wine from Portugal to achieve a 96/100 points by Robert Parker The Wine Advocate. Filipa and William received in 2018 the "Prémio Torre de Belém Nacional" for their unique export program and the way they promote their region and its wines (first time ever for a producer from the Bairrada region). After almost 20 years we are becoming "incontournable" in the region and we are very proud of our work! We are always looking for ways to improve the overall quality of the viticulture and the winemaking.
