Am Berg Am Berg Mittelberg is a scant three kilometers from Langenlois and, at 400 m. average elevation, somewhat higher. Yet there is quite a different atmosphere in this quiet village. Our new discovery belongs to the Gruber family (one of many so named here) which has been cultivating vines and other crops for many generations. The current one is represented by Michael, a reflective but ambitious man. The estate is in its tenth year of organic conversion. We were struck by the sheer brio and purity of the wines, many of which hail from vineyards familiar to us from the big guns of Langenlois. The estate stretches to 13 hectares, distributed between ten sites, with three distinct soil types (Urgestein, loess and loam). The price-quality relationship is exceptional, and we think we have a star here. They are one vintage away from organic certification! 1/0 Producer: Am Berg Country: Austria Region: Kamptal Subregion: Mittelberg City of Origin: Mittelberg Date Founded: Family Gruber 1451 Owner Name: Ludwig and Michael Gruber Vineyard Size: 15 HA Total Annual Production: 90,000 Download Info Sheet Property History: Our idea is to craft wines that are textural, complex and food friendly. To do this, we take grapes since centuries from a handful of specially selected vineyard sites around Mittelberg and Langenlois, each of which contribute different flavours and aromas to the wine. The resulting wine gives complexity and depth to our wines. We want to show with our wines the unique terroir of the Kamptal" -Ludwig VI. Owner History: The Gruber family likes to keep things simple so they have a small (and friendly!) team. A small team means everyone can be fully involved in the winemaking from start to finish. It’s just Michael, Ludwig junior, mother Melitta, father Ludwig and the unique grandmother. It also means Michael, the winemaker, can spend his whole time in the winery and vineyards making wine rather than managing a large team of people. Great winery facilities allow them to pick their grapes when they think they are ripe. The family members go through our vineyards together and taste the grapes before they start to pick all the grapes by hand. Family means they have the benefit of generations of experience through the ups and downs of vine-growing. Ainda means ‘yet’ or ‘still’. 40 different grapes, old vines, purchased grapes, 20-25% white grapes. As the whites ripen sooner than the white it brings some richness and masks the tannins, so it is drinkable sooner than the reds. In the past, people wanted it sooner which is why palhete was such a popular style. This cuvée aim at maintaining alive this portuguese traditional style. GCS-EFG21 View Claus Schneider's Producer Page Claus Schneider 2021 Haus Gupi "El Fayoum" Gutedel There is compelling evidence that Gutedel, or Chasselas, originates in Egypt, where it has been cultivated for millennia, including around the historic El Fayoum oasis, just west of the Nile near Cairo. Most unusually fermented for eight days by carbonic maceration, then gently pressed in an old wooden basket press, before resting for 12 months on its lees, this improbably baroque wine sports just 9% alcohol but has personality to spare. A deeper-hued, huskier version of Gutedel than La Bohème, with bitter cordial and herbal tea-like notes framed by suave tannins. Since the variety is blended for over 200 years in our area but not recognized very well and with a bad reputation, Johannes and I wanted to go new ways and defining a new stylistic. Still having a light wine but due to some skin contact a nice complexity as well. Soil Types Calcareous, Loam Elevation (meters) 270 Vine Age 20 Yields (hl/ha) 70 Harvest Method Hand-harvested Other Vineyard Details The vineyard for this wine is on our southwest facing Weil am Rhein site. Notes from the Producer: El Fayoum is a fantasy name and more related to the variety than the vineyard. There is an old story that Chasselas/Gutedel is one of the oldest varieties in the world and the origin might be in Egypt in oasis al-Fayyūm. Since the fermentation with whole bunch it's a very old school approach we decided for the name El Fayoum. Of course there are many stories, but following you can find an abstract from German Wikipedia translated with deepl. In the literature, Egypt is often cited as the country of origin of Chasselas, where it has been cultivated for around 5000 years. Several forms of 'Chasselas' can still be found today in the Fayyum oasis, around 70 kilometers southwest of Cairo. Several varieties of chasselas, which resemble the chasselas leaf on the wall paintings in the royal tombs near Luxor in Upper Egypt, still thrive there to this day. The Fayoumi variety in the large vineyard at Gianaclis, for example, bears a striking resemblance to the European chasselas.[3] The hypothesis of an origin in Egypt was put forward by the French ampelographer Adrien Berget, who believed he had recognized the grape variety there in 1932.[4][5] This thesis was later defended by Henry Wuilloud (1947). It was only later that the claim was made that the variety had been known in Fayyum for 5000 years. The Romans are said to have brought the grape variety to Europe. Another interpretation places the origin of the grape variety within the Palestine region in the Jordan Valley. Georges Rémy Georges Rémy All hail a new star! We were lucky enough to visit and taste with this producer just as he was releasing his first vintage (2014) in June 2018. He has taken his time getting things right, having made still red wine commercially since 2011, and gradually getting his vineyards (in the best parcels of Grands Crus Bouzy, Ambonnay and Louvois, and 1er Cru Tauxières)) to where they were biodynamically certified in 2020.. The average age of the vines is impressively old, and Georges’ intention is to enshrine the genetic material by practicing exclusively “sélection massale”. Ploughing and tilling have been practised for several years, together with composting (home-made). The estate runs to less than 5 hectares, and Georges vinifies personally only about 20% of his production. So the quantities are absolutely miniscule. Even so, he makes several different wines in an effort to highlight the diversity of his terroirs, which are distributed over 17 separate plots. The house style is to harvest ripe, never chapitalize, and vinify 100% in oak. We have just received our annual allocations, including homeopathic quantities of the most sought-after single parcel wines. 1/0 Producer: Georges Rémy Country: France Region: Champagne Subregion: Montage de Riems City of Origin: Bouzy Date Founded: 2011 Owner Name: Georges Remy Vineyard Size: 5.3 HA Total Annual Production: 10,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: We began vinifying Champagne hillsides in 2011 and had our first harvest in 2014. Dark, coffeed, balsamic, yet energetic, it can take a day or two to really flower after opening, but right from the start justified its price tag.
