Heitlinger 2022 Chardonnay Reserve Hilsbach
It has been fascinating to watch the rapid ascent of Chardonnay in Germany, both in quality and popularity. Of course, it has a long history in Baden, where the limestone soils offer a natural habitat for it. This young-vines cuvée of 1er and Grosse Lage wines is simply brilliant in its suave aplomb. The fermentation of 30% of the grapes in used barriques lends a familiar reductive smokiness, while the palate offers the sort of understated balance that makes the wine creamily unspittable. Burgundy must be feeling nervous!

Notes from the Producer: The grapes are gently harvested by hand, carefully sorted and fermented as whole berries in small containers. The malolactic fermentation takes place in used barriques, in which the wines mature for 8-12 months.
The grapes come from the vineyards of the Grosse Gewächse. After a gentle manual harvest, they are fermented spontaneously in used wooden barrels
