It comes from the Santorini Island but it is widely planted all over Greece. Assyrtiko is not famous for the intense aromas but for crisp, mineral - laden. High-acid reflects. Crete is really close to Santorini but here are the differences between the produced wines from Assyrtiko. Cretan Assyrtiko is more aromatic due to high altitude vineyards and less hot temperatures. Despite the minerality in Cretan Assyrtiko is more discreet, due to the young vines that have been planted in Crete. Assyrtiko is an excellent wine to pair with food, aided to its pronounced savoury profile. **So If you have a huge wine list and you want to pair it with fresh fish , just close your eyes and pick up an Assyrtko. - Christophe Pichon
Christophe Pichon Christophe Pichon We continue our careful exploration of the northern Rhône with the addition of this stellar producer of Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, St. Joseph and Cornas. Now in the third generation of the Pichon family, the estate covers 16 hectares split between the four appellations above and a small quantity of vin de pays. The domaine offers elegant, perfumed wines that punch way above their weight when their modest cost is considered – the WineWise paradigm! Christophe himself is a man of seriousness and commitment who is now in his second term as president of the Condrieu appellation, a job previously held by the legendary Georges Vernay. His elder son Corentin has taken over most of the winemaking responsibilities at this point. 1/3 Producer: Christophe Pichon Country: France Region: Rhone Subregion: Northern Rhone City of Origin: Chavanay Date Founded: 1993 Vineyard Size: 49.4 acres Total Annual Production: 100,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: It has always been a family affair. I took over the estate from my father, then in 1991 I bought some more vineyards. Two years later, I invested in an abandoned hillside so as to plant some Saint Joseph vines. Today, the estate owns 5 hectares of Condrieu, 4 hectares of red Saint Joseph, 2 hectares of white Saint Joseph, 3.9 hectares of Côte-Rôtie, 0.5 hectares of Cornas, 1 hectare of white Vin de Pays Collines Rhodaniennes and 0.5 hectares of red Vin de Pays in Seyssuel. Owner History: After finishing his studies in viticulture and oenology, Corentin joined the family estate in 2012. In 2014, he spent 6 months vinifying Syrah in Australia, in the well-known Barossa Valley region. On his return to France, he began vinifying his second vintage for the same year ! As a result of his broad experience, he has refined the vinification style in complete harmony with the estate's way of thinking and maintains the respect of the vines and the wines. As an example, he is now making white wines without sulphites. As for Alexis, he is gradually discovering all the different steps of wine-making, from working in the vineyards to the cellar, before acquiring more experience in the commercial activity of the estate. Alexis also hopes to spend some time abroad both to improve his English and to discover other wine producing domains. Learning about different cultures for producing and selling wine will broaden his experience. - Bio-weingut Schreiner
Bio-weingut Schreiner Bio-weingut Schreiner Gernot and Victoria Schreiner are a magnetic couple who have pursued their own singular way in wine since taking over the family’s 6 hectare estate in their hometown of Rust. Their adherence to organic practice far exceeds the requirements for certification, extending as it does to everything that they utilise in their vineyards and winery, including what they eat and what they pack with. It is a truly holistic and entirely sincere approach to life that one has to respect. But when one considers the quality of the wines that they make, one is awestruck by the magnitude of their achievement. These are people of the highest quality whose nature is reflected in the authenticity and limpidity of their wines. It is frankly astonishing that their wines have not been discovered before in America. 1/0 Producer: Bio-weingut Schreiner Country: Austria Region: Burgenland Subregion: Rust City of Origin: Rust Date Founded: 2007 Owner Name: Gernot & Victoria Schreiner Vineyard Size: 7 HA Total Annual Production: 25,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: 2007 taken over by Gernot and Victoria from Gernot's uncle, Johannes Schreiner. Until then 100% ex cellar sales to private consumers in combination with a bike rental in the house. Until the 1980s, the winery was traditionally run as a mixed agricultural estate (viticulture, pigs, cattle, chickens) by the grandparents of Gernot, Edith and Alfred Schreiner. In 2007, Gernot's vineyards, which he had already planted or cultivated in the 1990s in addition to his main occupation at a winery in Rust, were merged with the vineyards of Gernot's uncle Johannes. The entire vineyard area was immediately managed organically and applied for certification after the 2007 harvest. From the vintage 2012 on the wines have been certified organic. In the 10 years of management by Gernot and Victoria, the ex cellar sales have diminished and merely make up a small part of the total wine sales. During this time, not only were the vineyards converted, but also was the 400-year-old town house in the middle of Rust's old town, owned by Schreiner family for about 100 years, was gradually and authentically renovated and revitalised. In 2018 the Schreiners took an important step in their vineyards: they selected and planted a Blaufränkisch-PIWI variety explicitly for vinification. Owner History: Gernot actually moved in from a different career. He graduated in computer science and tried his hand at studying computer science for a short time. The turn to viticulture took place promptly. He worked for about 15 years in a renowned winery in Rust, with which Hennry made his first but all the more succinct statement in the red wine sector in 2001 and finally started building an organic winery together with Victoria in 2007, both following their dream. Victoria is also switched her career, she originally studied social work. Through her love for Gernot, her love for wine has grew. Today she is a strong voice for planting resp. preservation of hedges, also a passionate ornithologist and responsible for the creative side and the customer contact of the winery. Laurent Perrachon Laurent Perrachon This 28 hectare domaine has holdings in six of the ten crus of Beaujolais and makes a series of impeccable, site-specific wines of uncanny precision and charm. Beaujolais is enjoying a resurgence of popularity and respect these days precisely because of the fastidious work of conscientious producers like Laurent Perrachon and his formidable son Maxime. Their achievement in 2020 is nothing short of stunning. 1/0 Producer: Laurent Perrachon Country: France Region: Beaujolais Subregion: Beaujolais City of Origin: Juliénas Date Founded: 1877 Owner Name: Famille Perrachon Vineyard Size: 74.1 acres Total Annual Production: 15,000 cases Download Info Sheet Property History: The PERRACHON name appears in Julienas history as early as 1601. The Perrachon family acquired the domain of la Bottière, in Juliénas, in 1877. Then came the Domaine des Perelles on the Romanèche-Thorins territory, at the feet of the Moulin-à-Vent hills. The Domaine des Mouilles, now the heart of our operations, was acquired in 1989. It is the heart of the Julienas appellation, benefiting from the best exposure and the best soils. Recently, we added smaller parcels in Chénas, Fleurie, and Saint Amour. Owner History: Today we harvest grapes on six Crus (30 hectares) : Julienas of course, but also Morgon, Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Chenas and our latest addition, Saint-Amour, and also Beaujolais-Village rouge and Beaujolais Blanc (6.5 hectares). Today, the 7th generation of winemakers carries on its ancestor’s tradition with the same aim: to express the essence of the terroir.
