- Pateromichelakis
Pateromichelakis Pateromichelakis Crete is the largest island in the Mediterranean, which means that it offers marked climatic, geographical and even cultural differences within its expansive bounds. The wines of Chania on the western side of the isle diverge markedly from those of Heraklion, making the inclusion in our range of a second producer quite logical. The brothers Pateromichelakis are essentially two local olive farmers speaking the thick Cretan dialect who happen to make wine – but WHAT wine it is! We were especially impressed by the reds here, above all those made from autochthonous varieties. 1/0 Producer: Pateromichelakis Country: Greece Region: Crete Subregion: Chania City of Origin: Lousakies Owner Name: Yiannis and Manos Pateromihelakis Download Info Sheet Property History: They own 5ha of organically farmed vineyards in Kissamos region of western Chania. The majority of grapes are coming from the vineyard “Domata (Tho-ma-ta) at an altitude of 300 metres overlooking the Aegean sea and benefiting from the north cool breezes which help in perfect ripening conditions and retaining acidity in the grapes. The winery is producing wines from Romeiko, Mavrotragano and Assyrtiko grapes. Owner History: Pateromihelakis “π” Winery is a newly founded winery with a long family tradition in viticulture, winemaking and in organic olive oil making. The family was a very important wine making producer in the western part of Crete until the second world war. Yiannis and Manos, the twin brothers of the family, decided in 2005 to revive the legacy and started experimental vinifications of Romeiko, the most significant indigenous grape variety of Chania prefecture, and also Mavrotragano, a very important black variety of the Cyclades. - Lothar Kettern, Fio
Lothar Kettern, Fio Lothar Kettern, Fio Our favorite way to meet new producers is to have them recommended by our friends. So when Michi Moosbrugger of Schloss Gobelsburg said that he knew this “crazy guy in the Mosel” making great wines, our ears pricked up. The connection between them is famed Douro producer Dirk Neepoort, whose son Daniel lived with the Kettern family in Piesport for four vintages, followed now by his brother Marco. Together they have a project called Fio, making “Natural Wines” that challenge the old order and which we are now bringing in for the first time. Under the Kettern label, they offer the tried and true classics. In the 2020 Gault Millau Guide, Fio was anointed “Discovery of the Year” and both estates were promoted to 3.5 and 3 stars respectively. Schildknecht has also reviewed the wines most favorably, so we have a tiger by the tail, and you read about it here first! The estate was founded in the 1950’s by Lothar, but son Philipp has been in charge since 2009. To describe him as iconoclastic is an understatement. There is a paradox at work in Piesport which is that the easy-to-cultivate but inferior flatland vineyards on one side of the river cost much more than the fabled steep slopes of the Goldtröpfchen bowl on the other. But Philipp is a maniac for quality, so he traded almost all the land bought by his father for more challenging but infinitely more rewarding parcels in the Goldtröpfchen, including some in the great Falkenberg portion and other higher parts whose cooler micro-climates accord better with his aims. In the last year, he has expanded into Leiwen, buying parcels in the great Josefsberg vineyard, as well as increasing his holdings in Piesport. He has converted the estate to something approaching organic viticulture, while pushing the envelope with Fio and its low-sulphur wines. He has also converted most of his production to dry and off-dry wines, while maintaining the noble tradition of classically sweet Mosels to the manner born. In short, he offers us something of everything – bone 1/0 Producer: Lothar Kettern, Fio Country: Germany Region: Mosel Subregion: Rheinland-Pfalz City of Origin: Piesport Owner Name: Phillip Kettern Vineyard Size: 16.5 HA Download Info Sheet Property History: Our winery continues a centuries-long viticultural tradition began by the current winemaker's (Phillip Kettern) father over the last several decades. - Vins Gigou
Vins Gigou Vins Gigou Joel Gigou continues to be the iconic producer of Jasnières. This miniscule appellation is 25 miles north of Tours in the Coteaux du Loir (itself an appellation barely larger, where Gigou also has holdings). The whites are a product of that magical Loire symbiosis between Chenin Blanc and tufa. Arguably, the expression here is the most singular and extreme in all the Loire region. Gigou is a conscious archaist. One look at the ancient photograph on his labels of peasants tilling the vineyards will confirm that. But the wines will hold their own against all that modern wine-wizardry can throw forth. They have that thrilling fusion of fruit and mineral which only the greatest Rieslings, white burgundies and Savennières can offer, surmounted by an ethereal floral perfume that brings tears to the eye. Son Ludovic has been groomed to take over the estate, and he has proved to be as attuned as his father to the qualities that are Jasnières’ hallmark. When tasted amongst other wines of the appellation, they were as palpably dominant as any producer we have ever encountered in a comparative tasting. Unsurprisingly, they are a big hit with David Schildknecht. We have now bitten the bullet and brought in our first reds and sparkling wine. The wines have been organic for years, but starting with the 2018 vintage will be certified as such. The yeasts are native. 1/0 Producer: Vins Gigou Country: France Region: Loire Subregion: Coteaux du Loir, Jasnières City of Origin: La Chartre su le Loir Date Founded: 1974 Owner Name: Dorothée and Ludovic Gigou Vineyard Size: 32 acres Total Annual Production: 40-50,000 bt/yr Download Info Sheet Property History: Established in 1974 with 4 hectares in the Jasnieres appellation in the Loire. - Weegmüller
Weegmüller Weegmüller Steffi Weegmüller took this ancient family property to the very pinnacle of Pfalz estates, as has been recognised at home in Germany but also now in the U.S.A., where David Schildknecht has paid tribute to the quality of her wines. Quite literally next door to the famed house of Müller-Catoir, and sharing many of the same fabled vineyards, she offered a series of pristine, almost chiselled wines that unite Pfalz spice and generosity with manic purity and length. The sisters Weegmüller (see above) kept some of their vines, specifically a parcel of 0.33 ha. bequeathed by their aunt in the Herrenletten, after selling the family estate. It includes notably their beloved Scheurebe and the vines that also gave rise to their popular “Drei Schwestern” Gemischter Satz. From these holdings, they now sell just these two wines, both rendered with Steffi’s signature panache and generosity. It was natural that we would want to continue working with these lovable ladies! 1/0 Producer: Weegmüller Diversity: Female Winemaker Country: Germany Region: Pfalz Subregion: Pfalz City of Origin: Neustadt,Wstr. SNI-NEV17 View Nivarius's Producer Page Nivarius 2017 La Nevera (Rioja - Maturana Blanca) We have, in Viña Ijalba’s wine, the mother of all Maturanas Blancas. So it took something utterly exceptional for us to take on another. From old clones grown in a single 4.3 ha. vineyard at between 680 and 750 meters of altitude, the wine was fermented inFrench barriques but, crucially, aged on the frequently-stirred lees for 36 months in steel, being bottled and released exceptionally late. The result is taut and slightly austere, especially given the variety’s capacity for voluptuousness. But the focus and length are simply prodigious. Another white wine for connoisseurs.
