- Joel Delaunay
Thierry Delaunay has firmly established the estate he runs with his father in the forefront of this sprawling appellation. The village of Pouillé where he resides is home to several of the top Touraine growers and would seem to be exceptionally privileged, perhaps by dint of its relative elevation. His Sauvignon has developed a devoted following over the last few years for very good reason. What is truly impressive about Thierry is that he has greatly increased the size of his estate and production, but the average quality level of the wines has only gone up. He makes less red now than before, but what he makes is exemplary. For 50 years, he continued to enlarge the Domain by purchasing vines and constructing a sales cellar and modern winery . Read more Now firmly in the hands of French-Australian couple Caroline Jones and Thomas Bertrand (she makes the wine, he does the rest), this little domaine just east of Orange is now set fair on the course originally charted by Jean-Marc Espinasse. The newly-designed labels signal the new régime, but the founding principles of organic (mostly bio-dynamic) viticulture, honest wine-making and excellent value remain as they were. Thomas’ recent visit to California reignited interest in these rewarding wines and they go from strength to strength. Dom. Rouge-Bleu FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dom. Rouge-Bleu Country: France Region: Rhone Subregion: Southern Rhône City of Origin: Sainte Cécile les Vignes Date Founded: 2007 founded - 2012 New ownership Owner Name: Caroline JONES & Thomas BERTRAND Vineyard Size: 21 acres Total Annual Production: 2500 cases Download Info Sheet Property History: Read more Created in 2007 and situated between the revered appellations of Gigondas and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Rouge-Bleu cultivates its 9ha of land inspired by the core of biodynamic principles (Certification process started in 2017). Our vineyard spreads around our farm which was probably built 400 years ago and still contains some elements from the original building. Mostly composed of old vines, our wines are vinified in the pure tradition. Owner History: Read more CAROLINE: Originally from Western Australia, winemaker Caroline Jones has worked in various regions of Australia and France, with roles ranging from harvesting and pruning vines to cellar hand, laboratory manager and vintage winemaker. “My approach to winemaking is to harmonise the modern methods taught in Australia with the traditions and styles of France. This has ultimately led to the decision to be based in the southern Rhone region, where the unique terroir and local grape varieties can create wines of rich primary fruit flavours and depth, which, when augmented by maturation in aged oak barrels, produces wines of elegance, balance and complexity.” THOMAS:From the Vosges mountains in the east of France, Thomas spent 12 years in the UK working exclusively in the wine trade. After working for one of the major wine estates in Chateauneuf-du-Pape as head of Domestic Sales and Oenotourism, he was able, since 2015, to devote himself fully to Domaine Rouge-Bleu . Having sold and tasted many wines from around the world, Thomas decided it was time to have a go at making the stuff! A real wish to return to the rural lifestyle of his childhood, and Caroline’s shared interest in French living, were the catalysts for moving back to France and starting the search for their dream vineyard. “Passionate about wine, I have been surrounded by it all of my adult life. First at work and now on the domaine where I spend my time between managing the vineyard and representing the Domaine worldwide. A lover of wines from all horizons I am, like Caroline, a natural Grenache lover. Becoming a vigneron is a life changing experience and an eveyday learning curve which I hope to be sharing with you all soon, whether you are visiting us or we are coming to you!” Wines By Dom. - Dehours & Fils
First of all is Jérôme Dehours himself, a debonair, slow-talking man of exceptional lucidity and passion. To get a sense of his uniqueness, you can read the remarkable manifesto he publishes about his enterprise which describes every aspect of his work, down to the brand and engine size of his tractors. He took over the domaine in 1999 and started a conversion to organic viticulture, which is now complete. The domaine consists of 42 parcels, all within close reach of the winery. Dehours was the first producer in Champagne to offer “vins parcellaires” emanating from their lieux dits – a now commonplace practice. Total production is typically 70-80,000 bottles a year, all of which are held back for an above-average period before release to the market. (A superlative late-released 2003 from that most unfashionable vintage was the single most stunning wine tasted on a recent tour). The wines are not filtered or fined, all enjoy a passage through wood, and they are allowed to go through malolactic fermentation naturally in the spring. The yeasts used are indigenous, but Dehours makes their own cocktail of the best. Jérôme likes to employ the tailles, so often sold off by other producers, feeling that they impart useful and attractive qualities to the finished wines. Certainly, the prevailing cashmere elegance of his range is testimony to the fastidious care with which he works – a fact recognized by an adulatory press in France and important customers among the big houses who ask him to press their grapes for them. We count ourselves lucky indeed to have this important agency in our portfolio. Dehours & Fils FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Dehours & Fils Country: France Region: Champagne Subregion: Marne Valley City of Origin: Cerseuil, Mareuil-le-Port Date Founded: 1930 Owner Name: Jérôme Dehours Vineyard Size: 34.58 acres Total Annual Production: 6000 cases Download Info Sheet Property History: As is typical for the Champagne region, our domaine has lots of small, separate plots, including at least 42 vineyards divided between the villages of Mareuil-le-Port, Oeuilly and Troissy. We have a wide variety of exposures, geology and grape varieties. Our vines are planted at many different altitudes and have a wide range of ages. This creates many nuances which express themselves in our different wines. Owner History: Jérôme Dehours runs the estate, which was founded by his grandfather in 1930. Jérôme's father had developped a negociant business during the 80's. In 1996, Jérôme Dehours stopped this activity to focus on the vineyard. This marked a complete reset of the company (stock, material, clients,…)with an emphasis on the Terroir identity, together with more respectful and healthy practices (for both the environment and human beings). - Frontonio
Read more We get blind solicitations from wineries literally every day, but this one caught our eye immediately, because it was penned by none other than María José López de Heredia. She said, " if there is one person in the wine world that I could recommend it is Fernando Mora, because he gives me hope for the future of the world of wine in Spain." In his own words, this is what Fernando does : " recovering old vineyards in Valdejalón area in the north east part of Spain. Producing single vineyards garnachas from old vines up to 98 years old. Something we are very proud to do." With his partner Mario López they style themselves the “Garage Winery”, that being a literal description of the facility in which they originally crafted their wines. Oh, and Fernando became a Master of Wine, earning special distinction for his treatise on the Garnacha in Campo de Borja. The little-known region of Valdejalón, centered around their village of Épila on the banks of the River Jalón, nestles north of Calatayud. The climate is Mediterranean, with significant diurnal temperature changes and low rainfall. The vineyards lie at altitudes between 350 and 700 meters, and benefit from loose soil structure with notable limestone content. Many of the best vineyards are also conspicuously schistous. The team’s preference is for north-facing slopes, rich in stones, and planted to old vines. In their masterly hands, they give rise to Grenache wines (red AND white) of a purity and intensity we rarely see, at a price ridiculously fair, which have already been acclaimed by reviewers everywhere. One of the most remarkable aspects of this story is that Frontonio is quite literally the only producer making wines under the Valdejalón imprimatur. It is a tribute to Fernando’s intuition, particularly, that he could divine the exceptional potential of this area, whose results are, to our subjective judgment, consistently superior to anything else in Aragon. Frontonio FEMALE WINEMAKER Producer: Frontonio Country: Spain Region: Valdejalón Subregion: Campo de Borja and Valdejalón City of Origin: Zaragoza Date Founded: 2010 Owner Name: Fernando Mora MW and Francisco Latasa Total Annual Production: 140,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: Read more Frontonio is named after Saint Frontonio, the patrón saint of Épila, a town in Valdejalón, North-East Spain, where it is produced. Legend has it that Saint Frontonio was beheaded by the Romans. His body was buried in a cemetery and his head was thrown into the River Ebro near Zaragoza. Miraculously, his head was later found going upstream along the banks of the River Jalón in Épila. Likewise, this limited production of “micro” wine is the result of rowing against the stream. It is also something of a miracle. It comes from a humble garage where it is made by Fernando Mora MW, Francisco Latasa and Mario López without any fuss. Read more This impeccable producer of Kimmeridgean Chardonnay at reasonable prices has long been a mainstay of WineWise. Their estate extends to 55 hectares, all in the vicinity of Beines and points west. They also boast a fascinating museum of wine paraphernalia, including the largest collection of corkscrews that one can imagine. The founder Alain himself died in late 2020, but the estate is capably run by two women : his daughter Nathalie and long-time cellar master, Cyrille Mignotte. They suffered unbearable losses in the vineyards in three successive vintages, whether by frost, hail or oidium. As a result, supplies have had to be strictly allocated, and some wines have been completely unavailable, such as the Bourgogne Rouge. We hope for the best in 2022! - Herdade do Mouchão
Read more It is no exaggeration to say that we have been interested in this great estate since we began importing from Portugal over a decade ago. However, we were only recently able to taste their wines and connect the dots between the press accolades, their iconic status in Portugal and the wines themselves. It turns out that the oldest active winery in the Alentejo, beloved of luminaries as diverse as Jancis Robinson, Sarah Ahmed and Hugh Johnson, makes not just the world-class reds we were hoping to find, but stunning, seriously age-worthy whites as well. Their methods are entirely traditional, down to foot-treading in lagares and prolonged aging in barrel and bottle. Only in their adventurous approach to trellising in the vineyards do they show a tendency to modernity. A bit of history is in order here : originally (and continuously) a cork harvesting farm, they planted vineyards in the mid 19th century, bottled their first vintage in 1949 (after selling wine in every other kind of container previously), were expropriated by the government after the 1974 revolution (and returned to the Reynolds family 11 years later), and finally got electricity in 1991. Although most of their wines are a blend of grapes, Alicante Bouschet, brought to Portugal late in the 19th century and first planted at Mouchão, dominates the upper-end bottlings and reaches its highest expression here. In virtually all areas - age, history, status, and adherence to tradition - Mouchão is akin to López de Heredia. We are immensely proud to have this new “éminence grise” in our portfolio, to cast a benevolent gaze on the younger Portuguese stars whom you all already know so well. The first Alicante Bouschet vineyards were planted in the 1890's and the new winery was built in 1901 (we consider this the year of establishment for the wine business, although records shows that wine was already produced before that date). 1949 is the first vintage to be bottled and 1954 is the first vintage to reach the capital with its current white & red label. The estate was exprorieted after the 1974 Revolution to be returned to the family by 1985/1986. Owner History: Read more The Reynolds have arrived to Portugal in 1824, when Thomas Reynolds founded a trading company in Oporto to export Port Wine, Olive Oil, Honey and Cork to the U.K.. Short after the family heads south, to the Alentejo, and focus on the cork production, abandoning Oporto. They rented more than 100 proprieties across Alentejo and Mouchão was one of them. Read more The jovial Stefan Bauer has run his family’s estate since 2000. It is a sizable property in the fabled loess vineyards of the Wagram, at the gateway to the Krems region. He is a charter member of the “Fair and Green” group, which practises organic but eschews certification. Among his techniques is the employment of algae in place of systemic pesticides and the avoidance of all herbicides. All his sprays are organic (if one includes copper compounds under that umbrella). Stefan makes a wide array of wines, and shows mastery across the board. The prices are very fair for the quality and the packaging is snazzy. Read more Established in 1990, this was the first certified organic estate in Crete. With its 4000 year-old wine culture, this magnificent island offers no shortage of unique indigenous grape varieties, which are what we have chosen to feature here. The winery itself is intelligently constructed into a hillside, which offers natural insulation and the valuable possibility to move everything by gravity. Giorgios Paterianakis makes an impressive array of wines for a modestly sized estate. His oldest daughter Emanouella is impatient to take over, however, and is brimming with innovative ideas, including the adoption of biodynamic practices. A recent visit left us filled with excitement and optimism for the future of this outstanding estate. Paterianakis SA Vineyard Size: 16 HA Total Annual Production: 100,000 bottles Download Info Sheet Property History: Read more Everything started before 50 years where Manolis Paterianakis inherited the vineyards from his father in law, located at a fantastic semi-mountainous area of an approximate altitude of 650m, and went through organic cultivation in a period that it was almost unknown for the local society. Georgios Paterianakis, the son of Manolis, literally grown up in the vineyards of his family and he adopted in a very early age the principles of making pure and natural wines. Being a great and succeeded civil engineer he waffled back and forth of returning at his father land while at the early 90s he decided to quit a very successful career and to follow his family vision. After numerous wine trips, seminars and endless studying he managed to construct the Domaine’s winery in 1997 where the fist bottle of wine was produced. Carrying a perennial experience in civil engineering he designed a model gravity flow winery in different levels with the use of natural materials of the local environment being the first Cretan Winery with a holistic approach in winemaking and the first organic wines. Subsequently, he planted indigenous grape varieties like Vidiano and Moschato Spinas together with some famous French ones like Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. At the same time, he maintained the vineyards of his father of the famous Kotsifali, Mandilari and Thrapsathiri. In 2008 he enriched Domaine facilities with a superior Wine Tasting Hall while in 2010 four traditional luxurious suites are build in order to facilitate friends and partners during their visits. In 2010 the third generation, Emmanouela and Nicky took over the management starting a new era for the Domaine Paterianakis. New labels, such Moschato Spinas and Assyrtiko have been launched, organic vinification and biodynamic cultivation have already been adopted and been implemented, constant presence at international fairs has been established, new markets such as Germany, France, Belgium and USA have been approached and wine tourism has been worked a lot the latest years making the winery one of the distinctive in the Peza viticulturist region.
