The Kemetner family has been growing grapes in the eastern end of the Kamptal, near the famous Schloss Grafenegg, since the 17th century. The family crest, a heart pierced by two crossed arrows with three marigolds sprouting from it, appeared on an eighteenth-century market invoice signed by an ancestor and now marks every bottle. Today, the vineyards are run by brothers Simon and Nikolaus, the twelfth generation, though the estate's foundational philosophy remains their father's: Leopold oversaw the complete conversion to organic viticulture in 2008. There are ten hectares of vineyards distributed across seven Rieden (or crus). Our favorite, the estate's signature site, the Ried Karl, sits high enough above the cellar that the vines blur into the surrounding forest, growing in the corridor where warm winds off the Pannonian plain meet cooler currents from the Waldviertel. The result is a style built on vitality and force rather than polish, with a restless energy sharpened by Simon's seasons working vintages in California.
