Jean-Claude Roux

Quincy was the Loire's first AOC, among the very first in all of France (1936, and older than Sancerre), yet most of the United States has no idea it exists, because most Quincy has always been consumed locally. The region's post-war drift from viticulture into cereal farming nearly finished what obscurity started, and it took a crisis to reverse it: poor harvests and subsidy cuts in the early 1990s forced a reckoning. Grain-farmer turned wine-grower Jean-Claude Roux was among the neighbors who pooled resources and refocused on the vine, building a shared facility (collaborative, not a cooperative, each domaine producing its own wines) that anchored the appellation's revival. Jean-Claude’s deft hand with Sauvignon Blanc runs in the family; his son Albin now runs the 12-hectare estate with the same community-first instinct, HVE-certified since 2019. Only 15 percent of production is exported, which keeps Quincy obscure in the U.S., allowing it to sidestep the premium of its more famous neighbors while delivering top-quality Sauvignon Blanc on the same terms.
